Inleiding
In een traditioneel-ambachtelijke stijl in 1858 gebouwd GEMEENTEHUIS MET LAGERE SCHOOL en ONDERWIJZERSWOONHUIS. Markant gesitueerd in een bocht van de Oude Akerstraat aan het begin van de Bemelerberg in de gemeente Margraten.
Omschrijving
Het voormalige gemeentehuis met lagere school en onderwijzerswoning heeft een in dwarsrichting geplaatste kruisvormige plattegrond, telt twee bouwlagen onder zadeldaken met oud Hollandse pannen. Het pand is geheel in mergel opgetrokken. Rechthoekige houten vensters en deuren met segmentboogvormige bovenlichten. Gedeelte frontgevel springt vooruit en loopt uit in een topgevel met hierin een rond venster met stervormige roedeverdeling. In de linker- en rechterzijgevel van dit vooruitspringende deel deuren met een hardstenen omlijsting. Hoeklisenen. Strek geaccentueerd met boogfriesen en waterlijsten. Decoratief metselwerk onder de dakrand. Aan de rechterzijgevel een uitbouw in twee bouwlagen, en met zadeldak. Haaks op de achtergevel een aanbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak. Op dit plat dak de vroegere speelplaats van de lagere school.
Waardering
Het voormalige gemeentehuis van Bemelen met lagere school en onderwijzerswoonhuis is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een regionale culturele en bestuurlijke ontwikkeling en tevens een typologische ontwikkeling. Het object bezit streekgebonden architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de bouwstijl en het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het object aan de situering aan het begin van de Bemelerberg, tevens bezit dit object bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van de gemeente Margraten. Het object is tenslotte van algemeen belang op grond van de redelijke mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en de zeldzaamheid.

The former municipal building with primary school and schoolmaster's dwelling has a cruciform ground plan placed in transverse direction, comprises two storeys under gabled roofs with old Dutch tiles. The building is entirely constructed in marl. Rectangular wooden windows and doors with segmental arch fanlights. Part of the front facade projects forward and terminates in a pointed gable with a round window featuring star-shaped glazing bars within it. In the left and right side facades of this projecting part, doors with a hard stone surround. Corner pilasters. Horizontal alignment accentuated with arch friezes and drip mouldings. Decorative brickwork under the eaves. On the right side facade an extension in two storeys with a gabled roof. Perpendicular to the rear facade an addition in one storey with a flat roof. On this flat roof the former playground of the primary school.
