Inleiding:
Twee schachtovens van een kalkbranderijcomplex, gelegen op een terreingedeelte tussen de stadsgracht en de Dedemsvaart, direct ten noorden van de oude stadskern van Hasselt en behorend tot het beschermde stadsgezicht. Het betreft hier de beide oudste ovens. Tot het complex behoorden nog twee kalkovens, respectievelijk daterend van rond 1946 en rond 1970, alsmede een rond 1946 gebouwde lange loods tevens leshuis waarlangs later een kleinere schuur is gezet. Deze complexonderdelen zijn evenwel eind 1994 afgebroken. Voorts zijn roerende goederen behorend tot het kalkbranderijbedrijf op het terrein aanwezig, met name een jacobsladder, japanners, verdeelbak, zeef en verpakopstelling.
Omschrijving:
De twee oudste, ronde ovens zijn opgetrokken uit handvorm bakstenen en dateren van ca. 1850. Rond 1946 werd het bovenstuk van de schacht vernieuwd, vonden er herstellingen aan de steunberen plaats en werden ze geschikt gemaakt voor continu gebruik. De ovens hebben in de schacht een laaddeur en er zijn ijzeren ankers in en om de rookvang aangebracht. Van dit op zich belangrijke historisch-industrieel complex met kalkovens zijn de beide oudste ovens typologisch, architectuur- en cultuurhistorisch van belang. Deze twee ovens zijn relatief goed bewaard gebleven; latere herstellingen en aanpassingen zijn als zodanig herkenbaar.
Waardering:
Twee op een kalkbranderijcomplex gesitueerde kalkovens, van cultuurhistorisch en industrieel-archeologisch belang als monument vanwege:
- de typologische betekenis in de ontwikkeling van de oventypen in ons land, als voorlopers van de door W.F. Stoel rond 1860 ontwikkelde oven;
- de situering als onderdeel van een complex van historisch-geografische betekenis en gesitueerd aan transportroutes overwater;
- het belang van dit complex voor het sociaal-economisch beeld van deze bedrijfstak in het algemeen en voor Hasselt en omgeving in het bijzonder;
- het feit dat (restanten van) schelpkalkbranderijen in dit deel van het land, maar ook elders in Nederland, inmiddels zeer zeldzaam zijn geworden.

Introduction:
Two shaft kilns of a lime kiln complex, located on a plot of land between the city moat and the Dedemsvaart, directly north of the old city centre of Hasselt and belonging to the protected townscape. These are the two oldest kilns. The complex also included two lime kilns, dating respectively from around 1946 and around 1970, as well as a long shed and schoolhouse built around 1946 alongside which a smaller shed was later placed. These complex components were, however, demolished at the end of 1994. Furthermore, moveable goods belonging to the lime kiln business are present on the site, in particular a Jacob's ladder, Japanese stoves, distribution tank, sieve and packing setup.

The two oldest, round kilns are built from hand-made bricks and date from ca. 1850. Around 1946 the upper part of the shaft was renewed, repairs were made to the buttresses and they were made suitable for continuous use. The kilns have a loading door in the shaft and iron anchors have been placed in and around the smoke chamber.
