Inleiding
HERENHUIS, gesitueerd op de hoek van de nagenoeg gesloten, noordelijke gevelwand van de Ubbo Emmiussingel en de Ubbo Emmiusstraat, gebouwd in 1887-1888 in opdracht van aannemer/architect H.J. Dopheide naar eigen ontwerp in een eclectische bouwstijl, karakteristiek voor de architectuur uit het laatste kwart van de negentiende eeuw. Het gebouw maakt deel uit van een ensemble van twee herenhuizen. Het gebouw is in 1930 aan de achterzijgevel uitgebreid met een aanbouw voor praktijkruimte. Het interieur is in 1965 inwendig verbouwd en aangepast. De oorspronkelijke stucplafonds zijn in beschadigde vorm nog wel aanwezig. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als woonhuis.
Omschrijving
Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain met drie bouwlagen onder een schilddak, belegd met een zwarte Friese golfpan. De voorgevel is drie raamtraveeën breed en opgemetseld uit roodbruine baksteen. De noordelijke zijgevel is vijf raamtraveeën breed. De verdiepingen worden afgesloten door een geprofileerde stuc cordonlijst. Het souterrain ligt verdiept en is gepleisterd. Een drietredige trap en stoep leidt naar de voordeur. Op de begane grond zijn de deur- en vensteropeningen segmentboogvormig gesloten. De segmentbogen zijn gepleisterd en gedecoreerd met vrouwenkoppen. Op de eerste verdieping zijn de vensters rondgesloten en van elkaar gescheiden door gestucte pilasters, die spitsboogvormige omlijstingen met leeuwenkoppen dragen. De tweede verdieping bevat drie vensters waarvan de middelste rondbogig is; de overige twee vensters zijn rechtgesloten. Boven deze vensters zijn verdiepte, gepleisterde velden aangebracht. Met een vlakke pilasterstelling om het middelste venster wordt een risaliet gesuggereerd. De gevel bevat op de hoeken over drie bouwlagen gestucte hoekblokken. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een kroonlijst, die een geprofileerde bakgoot draagt. Het voordakschild bevat in het midden een vlak afgesloten kajuit met twee gepaarde rondboogvensters. Ook de linker zijgevel is vijf raamtraveeën breed en de verdiepingen worden eveneens afgesloten door een geprofileerde stuc cordonlijst. Een drietredige trap en stoep leidt naar een tweede voordeur.
Inwendig nog van belang de hal met geornamenteerd stuc plafond en het houten trappenhuis met gesneden eindbalusters.

TOWNHOUSE, situated at the corner of the almost closed, northern facade row of the Ubbo Emmiussingel and the Ubbo Emmiusstraat, built in 1887-1888 on commission of contractor/architect H.J. Dopheide to his own design in an eclectic building style, characteristic of the architecture from the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The building forms part of an ensemble of two townhouses. The building was extended in 1930 on the rear facade with an addition for practice space. The interior was internally rebuilt and adapted in 1965. The original stucco ceilings are still present in damaged form. The building is currently in use as a residential house.
Description
The building is erected on a floor plan that is predominantly rectangular and consists of a basement with three storeys under a hipped roof, covered with a black Frisian corrugated tile. The front facade is three bays wide and laid up from reddish-brown brick. The northern side facade is five bays wide. The storeys are closed off by a moulded stucco string course. The basement is sunk and is plastered. A three-step stair and stoep leads to the front door. On the ground floor the door and window openings are closed with segmental arches. The segmental arches are plastered and decorated with female heads. On the first floor the windows are round-headed and separated from each other by stuccoed pilasters, which carry pointed-arch surrounds with lion heads. The second floor contains three windows of which the middle one is round-arched; the other two windows are square-headed. Above these windows sunken, plastered fields are provided. With a flat pilaster arrangement around the middle window a risallit is suggested. The facade contains on the corners over three storeys stuccoed corner blocks. The facade is closed off by a cornice, which supports a moulded gutter. The front roof section contains in the middle a flatly closed cabin with two paired round-arch windows. The left side facade is also five bays wide and the storeys are likewise closed off by a moulded stucco string course. A three-step stair and stoep leads to a second front door.
Internally still of importance the hall with ornamented stucco ceiling and the wooden staircase with carved end balusters.
Evaluation
TOWNHOUSE, erected in a richly decorated, eclectic building style, characteristic of the architecture from the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as an intact component of the high-value urban planning structure of the ring road series on the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
