Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de gesloten, noordelijke gevelwand van de Ubbo Emmiussingel, gebouwd in 1885 in opdracht van Jhr. W.D. Junius van Hemert in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl met neo-classicistische stijlkenmerken. Het gebouw is sinds 1953 in gebruik als kantoor en daartoe inwendig gedeeltelijk aangepast. De indeling van de achtergevel is gewijzigd: de veranda aan de achtergevel is verwijderd en dichtgemaakt. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als kantoor met bovenwoning. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een in hoofdvorm rechthoekige plattegrond en bestaat uit een souterrain met twee bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met leien in Rijndekking. De voorgevel is drie traveeën breed en opgetrokken uit roodbruine baksteen. De voorgevel is verlevendigd met stuc dorpelbanden die eveneens doorlopen in de bakstenen pilasters op de hoeken van de gevel. Het souterrain, waarin een segmentboogvormig gesloten venster is aangebracht, is met roze sierpleister bespoten. Voor het souterrain is een dwarsgeplaatste hardstenen trap met bordes aangebracht, waarin de souterraindeur is ondergebracht. De trap wordt omzoomd door smeedijzeren hekwerk. Op de begane grond zijn de deur met bovenlicht en de vensters korfboogvormig gesloten met in de bogen negblokken en sluitstenen. De toegang bestaat uit een rijk met rolwerk gebeeldhouwde, dubbele brede deur. De borstwering van de verdieping is tussen een geprofileerde cordonlijst en een onderdorpelband gevat. Onder het middelste venster is een dichtgezette balustrade van kunststeen aangebracht. De vensters op de verdieping hebben een afgeknotte boegvorm als sluiting. Het middelste venster wordt omlijst door stuc pilasters. Dit travee springt ook bij kroon- en gootlijst een weinig uit. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een kroonlijst, die tussen de consoles is versierd met een reeks rozetten. De consoles ondersteunen een geprofileerde houten bakgoot. Het voordakschild bevat een forse kajuit met pilasters en rolwerkwangen. Inwendig nog van belang de gang met witmarmeren vloer en stuc ornamentiek, houten trap met bewerkte balusters en een aantal stuc plafonds op de verdieping. Introduction TOWNHOUSE, situated in the closed, northern facade wall of the Ubbo Emmiussingel, built in 1885 on the commission of Jhr. W.D. Junius van Hemert in a richly ornamented, eclectic architectural style with neo-classical style characteristics. The building has been in use as an office since 1953 and has been partially adapted internally for this purpose. The arrangement of the rear facade has been altered: the veranda on the rear facade has been removed and closed off. The building is currently in use as an office with a flat above. Description The building is erected on a plan that is basically rectangular in form and consists of a basement with two storeys under a hipped roof clad with slates in Rhine covering. The front facade is three bays wide and erected in reddish-brown brick. The front facade is enlivened with stucco sill bands which also continue in the brick pilasters on the corners of the facade. The basement, in which a segmental arched closed window has been installed, is sprayed with pink decorative plaster. In front of the basement a transverse hardstone staircase with landing has been installed, in which the basement door is housed. The staircase is bordered by wrought-iron railings. On the ground floor the door with fanlight and the windows are closed with basket arch forms with nogs and keystones in the arches. The entrance consists of a double wide door richly carved with scrollwork. The parapet of the storey is set between a moulded cordon line and a sill band. Below the middle window a filled-in balustrade of artificial stone has been installed. The windows on the storey have a truncated arched form as closure. The middle window is framed by stucco pilasters. This bay also projects slightly at the cornice and gutter line. The facade is concluded by a cornice which is decorated between the consoles with a series of rosettes. The consoles support a moulded wooden gutter. The front roof structure contains a substantial cabin with pilasters and scrollwork cheeks. Internally still noteworthy are the hallway with white marble floor and stucco ornamentation, wooden staircase with worked balusters and a number of stucco ceilings on the storey. Evaluation TOWNHOUSE, erected in a fine eclectic architectural style with a neo-classical facade composition, characteristic of the architecture of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance because of the architectural and aesthetic qualities of the design and from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as an intact component of the high-quality urban planning structure of the ring of boulevards on the south side of the city centre of Groningen.
