Inleiding PAKHUIS, gesitueerd op de hoek van de Poelestraat en het Schuitendiep, gebouwd in 1898 in opdracht van H. Smith als pakhuis met kantoor voor diens koffie- en theegroothandel in een zeer rijk uitgedoste eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is sinds 1980 in gebruik als horecabedrijf en daartoe inwendig geheel aangepast.Omschrijving Het imposante hoge gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond met een schuine zijde aan de Poelestraat en telt zes bouwlagen onder een een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een zwarte pan. Voor het dakschild aan de Poelestraat is een decoratief tympaan aangebracht, bekroond met een smeedijzeren ornament; onder de gootlijst aan het Schuitendiep kwam een karakteristiek houten trijshuisje. Aan de Poelestraatzijde is de begane grond geheel bekleed met natuurstenen platen, geleed met zwart aangezette voegen. De roodbruine bakstenen gevels zijn verlevendigd met dorpelbanden, sluitstenen, negblokken, al dan niet van ornament voorziene cordonlijsten en kroonlijsten. De raam- en deuropeningen zijn rechtgesloten, maar kregen segmentbogen met trommels. Deze bouwlaag wordt door een geprofileerde kroonlijst afgesloten. Aan de zijde van het Schuitendiep is de kroonlijst bepleisterd. De gevel is hier van baksteen opgemetseld, de openingen (deur, drie vensters en een nis) kregen een rechte sluiting met segmentboog. De verdiepingen zijn geleed door pilasters en de verdiepingsvensters van de eerste en tweede, en die van de derde en vierde zijn door een profilering samengevat. Die van de derde bouwlaag zijn rechtgesloten. De zesde bouwlaag bevat een reeks van smalle rondboogvenstertjes. Introduction WAREHOUSE, situated on the corner of the Poelestraat and the Schuitendiep, built in 1898 on behalf of H. Smith as a warehouse with office for his coffee and tea wholesale business in a very richly decorated eclectic architectural style. The building has been in use as a catering establishment since 1980 and was entirely adapted internally for this purpose. Description The imposing tall building is erected on a rectangular plan with a slanting side on the Poelestraat and comprises six storeys under a truncated hipped roof, laid with black tile. For the roof slope on the Poelestraat a decorative tympanum has been applied, crowned with a wrought-iron ornament; under the gutter line on the Schuitendiep came a characteristic wooden turret hut. On the Poelestraat side the ground floor is entirely clad with natural stone slabs, jointed with blackened joints. The reddish-brown brick facades are enlivened with lintel bands, voussoirs, blocks, with or without ornament-bearing cordon lines and cornices. The window and door openings are straight-headed, but received segmental arches with drums. This storey is closed off by a moulded cornice. On the Schuitendiep side the cornice is plastered. The facade is built of brick here, the openings (door, three windows and a niche) received a straight closing with segmental arch. The storeys are articulated by pilasters and the storey windows of the first and second, and those of the third and fourth are summarised by a moulding. Those of the third storey are straight-headed. The sixth storey contains a series of narrow round-arched windows. Assessment Warehouse, erected in an eclectic architectural style very richly decorated for a warehouse, typical of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value and because of the integrity of the exterior, as well as because of its significance for the history of trade and economy of the city of Groningen. Moreover, the building forms a striking architectural element in its surroundings.
