The register's description

Introduction BANK BUILDING, situated on the corner of the Oude Boteringestraat and the Rodeweeshuisstraat, built in 1892 as an agency of the Nederlandse Bank, designed by the Amsterdam architect A. Salm in a richly decorated, eclectic architectural style with characteristics of neo-baroque. The building is currently in use as a restaurant and has been internally adapted for this purpose. Description The striking building is erected on a plan that is essentially rectangular in form and comprises two storeys and an attic storey under a transversely-placed gabled roof, covered with slates in Maas bond. The four bay-wide front facade is constructed of red brick. The basement is clad in hardstone. The front door on the principal floor is reached by a staircase of seven steps with heavy hardstone railings and ornamental ironwork. The facade openings on the principal floor are framed between five half-pilasters in stucco and topped with a heavy, moulded cornice. The pilasters are decorated with floral motifs in high-relief stucco. The double, richly sculptured front door and the windows are set back in the plane of the facade and are closed with a pressed round arch, in which cassettes are inserted. The windows have three-part glazing bars. On the stringcourse with egg-and-dart moulding, four round wreaths with ribbons in stucco are applied. The storey windows have heavily moulded cross windows and are framed between half-pilasters with Ionic capitals and fluting. Above the rectangular-closed windows, rectangular moulding is applied. Two pilasters support a second stringcourse with an aedicule-like ornament, with a lion's head and pediment. In the gable contain two-part windows with heavy moulding under a segmental arch. The drums are decorated with stucco relief work and also beneath the window sills. The projecting and receding gable tops are articulated by three pilaster-strips, and have a curved cast-concrete tympanum with floral motifs in stucco. The sober side facade is constructed of reddish-brown brick. On the principal floor, a three-part window is placed under a three-part segmental arch. In the gable top is a window with a wrought-iron balconette and a decoratively worked wrought-iron hoist beam. The top is crowned by a striking polygonal brick chimney. Valuation Bank building, with a monumental, representative, eclectic facade with two baroque projecting and receding gable tops, designed by the nationally renowned Amsterdam architect A. Salm (1892), of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, because of the rarity of the design and because of the architectural integrity of the exterior. Furthermore, the building forms an important element in the architecturally richly varied Oude Boteringestraat in Groningen.
