Inleiding MEUBELTOONZAAL MET WONING, gesitueerd in de gesloten, uit overwegend oudere bebouwing bestaande westelijke gevelwand van de Oosterstraat, gebouwd in 1906 in opdracht van de Fa. J.B. Wachters naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect A.Th. van Elmpt in een verfijnde Art Nouveau-stijl. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als winkel met bovenwoning. De vernieuwde winkelpui is van ondergeschikt belang. De sectieltegeltableau's zijn gesigneerd en vervaardigd door 'Joost Thooft en Labouchere, Delft'. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak met een op de begane grond niet oorspronkelijke winkelpui. Op de eerste verdieping is over de volle breedte van de gevel een groot breed venster aangebracht onder een hardstenen korfboog. De boog wordt door twee ranke hardstenen halfzuilen gesteund. Het drieledige venster heeft een verfijnde houten roedeverdeling. De eerste verdieping wordt aan weerszijden afgesloten door twee bewerkte hardstenen penanten, bekroond met medaillons, voorstellende timmergereedschap: hamer en zaag (rechts) en passer en driehoek (links). Op de terracotta tegeltableau's in de zwikken van de boog zijn tegen de achtergrond van gestileerde bloemen en bladeren elegante, halfliggende aan elkaar gespiegelde vrouwenfiguren afgebeeld. De tableau's zijn uitgevoerd in wit en gele, oker en blauwe kleuren. Op de tweede verdieping, die is opgetrokken uit witte verblendsteen is een drieledig venster, geflankeerd door twee smallere vensters, onder een doorlopende hardstenen latei. In de opgemetselde geveltop is een rondboogvenster met hardstenen negblokken en sluitstenen aangebracht. De top is bekroond met een driehoekig hardstenen tympaan en een vijftal hardstenen gebeeldhouwde penanten. Introduction FURNITURE SHOWROOM WITH DWELLING, situated in the closed, consisting predominantly of older buildings western facade wall of the Oosterstraat, built in 1906 on commission of Fa. J.B. Wachters according to the design of Groningen architect A.Th. van Elmpt in a refined Art Nouveau style. The building is now in use as a shop with upper dwelling. The renewed shopfront is of subordinate importance. The sectile tile tableaux are signed and made by 'Joost Thooft en Labouchere, Delft'. Description The building is erected on a rectangular floor plan and comprises three storeys under a truncated hipped roof with a shopfront on the ground floor that is not original. On the first floor, across the full width of the facade, a large broad window has been installed under a hardstone basket arch. The arch is supported by two slender hardstone half-columns. The three-part window has a refined wooden glazing bars. The first floor is closed off on either side by two worked hardstone pilasters, crowned with medallions, depicting carpentry tools: hammer and saw (right) and compass and triangle (left). On the terracotta tile tableaux in the spandrels of the arch, against a background of stylized flowers and leaves, elegant, half-reclining mirrored female figures are depicted. The tableaux are executed in white and yellow, ochre and blue colours. On the second floor, which is built from white facing brick, is a three-part window, flanked by two narrower windows, under a continuous hardstone lintel. In the built-up gable top is a round-arched window with hardstone jamb blocks and voussoirs installed. The top is crowned with a triangular hardstone tympanum and five hardstone carved pilasters. Valuation Furniture showroom with upper dwelling, built in 1906 in the manner of the Renewal Styles of around the turn of the century, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value on account of the unique stylistic character of the total facade design, in which fine terracotta tile tableaux and natural stone detailings are installed.
