Inleiding HAVENKANTOOR, markant gesitueerd in de gesloten gevelwand op de meest westelijke hoek van de Noorderhaven, gebouwd in circa 1870 in opdracht van de gemeente Groningen als havenkantoor in een sobere doch karakteristieke, eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als kantoor met bovenwoningen. Omschrijving Het brede, monumentale gebouw is opgetrokken op een smalle, rechthoekige, maar gerende en op de hoek afgeschuinde plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een zwarte golfpan. De gevels worden afgesloten door een lijstgoot. De geheel gepleisterde gevels zijn aan de korte zijde twee, aan de afgeschuinde zijde eveneens twee en aan de lange zijde vijf traveeën breed. Alle muuropeningen zijn aan de bovenzijde afgerond. De deur aan de korte zijde is omlijst met geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk. In de uiterste travee aan de lange zijde is een portiek aangebracht met een kader van pilasters en een kroonlijst. De vierde travee kreeg dezelfde omlijsting, maar de deur is daar weer tot venster dichtgezet. De zorgvuldige decoratie is hier ook op de verdiepingen doorgezet: de vensters hebben geprofileerd lijstwerk met een decoratieve kuif (op de eerste verdieping). De afgeschuinde dubbele travee is voor het dak bekroond met een fronton waarin vlakvullend het wapen van de stad Groningen met dubbele adelaar in reliëf is afgebeeld. Waardering Havenkantoor, met monumentale gestucte lijstgevels, gesitueerd op het snijpunt van zichtassen over het omliggende havengebied van de Noorderhaven, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de uitzonderlijke architectonische kwaliteit en vanwege zijn betekenis voor de sociaal-economische geschiedenis van de stad Groningen. Introduction HARBOUR OFFICE, markedly situated in the closed facade wall on the most westerly corner of the Noorderhaven, built circa 1870 on commission of the municipality of Groningen as a harbour office in a sober yet characteristic, eclectic architectural style. The building is now in use as an office with upper dwellings. Description The broad, monumental building is erected on a narrow, rectangular, but deep and at the corner chamfered floor plan and comprises three storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with black corrugated tile. The facades are finished with a drip moulding. The fully rendered facades are two bays wide on the short side, likewise two on the chamfered side and five bays wide on the long side. All wall openings are rounded at the top. The door on the short side is framed with profiled stucco moulding. In the outermost bay on the long side a portico has been installed with a frame of pilasters and a cornice. The fourth bay received the same framing, but the door there has been closed off as a window. The careful decoration is also carried through on the upper storeys: the windows have profiled moulding with a decorative hood (on the first floor). The chamfered double bay is crowned above the roof with a pediment in which the coat of arms of the city of Groningen with double eagle in relief is depicted in space-filling manner. Valuation Harbour office, with monumental stuccoed moulded facades, situated at the intersection of sight lines over the surrounding harbour area of the Noorderhaven, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value on account of its exceptional architectural quality and because of its significance for the social and economic history of the city of Groningen.
