Inleiding HERENHUIS, gesitueerd in de gesloten, westelijke gevelwand van de Nieuwe Ebbingestraat, gebouwd in 1915 in opdracht van G.J. Kraft naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect A.Th. van Elmpt in een neo-barokke bouwstijl. Het gebouw is sinds 1957 in gebruik geweest als kantoor en daartoe inwendig aangepast. De begane grond is later doorgetrokken met het aangrenzende pand. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als slagerij met bovenwoning. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een nagenoeg vierkante plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder een dwarsgeplaatst schilddak, belegd met een geglazuurde Hollandse pan. Op de nokken staan schoorstenen met borden. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een geprofileerde houten bakgoot op bewerkte consoles. De voorgevel is drie traveeën breed en opgemetseld uit een grijsbruine baksteen. Het voorerf wordt afgescheiden door hardstenen penanten. Het geheleoppervlak van de pui is tot op de hoogte van de wisseldorpels bekleed met granieten platen. De vensterbanken zijn uit hardsteen vervaardigd. In het midden bevindt zich een monumentale ingangspartij met een rondlopende twee-tredige hardstenen stoep. De bewerkte houten paneeldeur wordt geflankeerd door zijlichten met gekleurd glas-in-lood en granieten zuilen. De verdiept liggende voordeur wordt overspannen door een korfboog, waarboven een ovaal bovenlicht is aangebracht, omlijst met gebeeldhouwd rol- en loofwerk. Aan weerszijden zijn de gebeeldhouwde consoles van het balkon op de eerste verdieping geplaatst. De middentravee wordt geaccentueerd door een monumentale loggia, die is ondergebracht in een kajuitachtige opbouw. De loggia heeft zandstenen zuilen en een zandstenen balustrade. De loggia wordt door een tympaanvormige lijst gesloten. De gevel wordt evenals de middentravee aan weerszijden geflankeerd door pilasterstellingen. De pilasters zijn voorzien van speklagen. De vensters op de begane grond zijn gedekt met natuurstenen lateien. Die van de verdieping hebben strekken en gebeeldhouwde negblokken. Inwendig nog van belang de hal met marmeren lambrizering en verfijnde stucdecoraties, houten tochtdeur met geslepen glas, het houten trappenhuis met monumentale glas-in-loodvensters, de kamer links van de hal met oorspronkelijke houten lambrizeringen en balkonplafond en een aantal oorspronkelijke, met diermotieven bewerkte houten paneeldeuren. Introduction GENTLEMAN'S HOUSE, situated in the closed, western facade of the Nieuwe Ebbingestraat, built in 1915 on commission of G.J. Kraft after design by Groningen architect A.Th. van Elmpt in a neo-baroque architectural style. The building has been in use as an office since 1957 and was adapted internally for this purpose. The ground floor was later extended to connect with the adjacent property. The building is currently in use as a butcher's shop with a dwelling above. Description The building is erected on an approximately square ground plan and comprises two storeys under a transversely positioned hipped roof, covered with a glazed Holland tile. Chimneys with caps stand on the ridges. The facade is finished with a profiled wooden gutter on worked consoles. The front facade is three bays wide and built of greyish-brown brick. The forecourt is separated by hard stone pilasters. The entire surface of the storefront is clad with granite slabs up to the height of the transom bars. The window sills are made of hard stone. In the centre is a monumental entrance section with a continuous two-step hard stone stoop. The worked wooden panel door is flanked by sidelights with coloured glass-in-lead and granite columns. The recessed front door is spanned by a basket arch, above which an oval fanlight is placed, framed with sculptured scroll and leafwork. On either side, the sculptured consoles of the first-floor balcony are placed. The middle bay is accentuated by a monumental loggia, which is housed in a cabin-like structure. The loggia has sandstone columns and a sandstone balustrade. The loggia is closed by a tympanum-shaped moulding. The facade is flanked on either side by the middle bay with pilaster arrangements. The pilasters are provided with brick courses. The windows on the ground floor are topped with natural stone lintels. Those on the upper floor have stretches and sculptured corner blocks. Interior features of note are the hall with marble wainscoting and refined stucco decorations, wooden draught door with cut glass, the wooden staircase with monumental glass-in-lead windows, the room to the left of the hall with original wooden wainscoting and balcony ceiling and a number of original wooden panel doors worked with animal motifs.
