Inleiding
HOTEL, gesitueerd in de gesloten oostelijke gevelwand van de Herestraat, gebouwd in 1892 in opdracht van J.H. Willems naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect P.M.A. Huurman in een eclectische bouwstijl. De begane grond van het jarenlang als hotel in gebruik geweest zijnde gebouw is thans in gebruik als winkelpand en de verdiepingen en aanbouw aan de achterzijde als wooneenheden, waartoe het gebouw inwendig geheel is aangepast. De balkons op de eerste verdieping zijn vernieuwd. Ondanks deze wijzigingen heeft het gebouw zijn monumentale karakter behouden.
Omschrijving
Het boven zijn omgeving uitstekende gebouw is opgetrokken op een diepe, rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen en een mezzanine-verdieping die bekroond wordt door een attiek/balustrade. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een kroonlijst met besneden consoles, die een geprofileerde bakgoot dragen. De voorgevel is zeven raamtraveeën breed en symmetrisch van opzet. De begane grond wordt geheel in beslag genomen door twee aaneensluitende moderne winkelpuien. Het gevelwerk is geheel gestuct en van schijnvoegen voorzien. Alle vensters zijn rechtgesloten en zijn in het pleisterwerk voorzien van streksuggesties. De iets risalerende tweede en zesde travee, met op de eerste verdieping openslaande balkondeuren, zijn voorzien van geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk en bekronende decoraties. De eerste en tweede verdieping worden gescheiden door een cordonlijst die de horizontaliteit benadrukt. Het gebouw wordt bekroond door een forse balustrade/attiek met penanten en balusters.

HOTEL, situated in the closed eastern gable wall of the Herestraat, built in 1892 on the commission of J.H. Willems designed by Groningen architect P.M.A. Huurman in an eclectic building style. Description
The building, standing out above its surroundings, is constructed on a deep, rectangular ground plan and has three storeys and a mezzanine floor which is crowned by an attic/balustrade. The ground floor is entirely occupied by two adjoining modern shop fronts. The gable work is entirely stuccoed and provided with false joints. All windows are rectilinear and in the plasterwork are provided with jamb suggestions. The slightly projecting second and sixth bay, with bi-fold balcony doors on the first storey, are provided with profiled stucco moulding and crowning decorations. The first and second storey are separated by a cordon moulding which emphasizes the horizontality. The building is crowned by a substantial balustrade/attic with pilasters and balusters.
