Inleiding CAFE, gesitueerd in de gesloten, oostelijke gevelwand van de Herestraat, gebouwd als 'Café Suisse' in 1893 naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect P.M.A. Huurman in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl. Het gebouw is diverse malen verbouwd, bezit een moderne pui en is inwendig aangepast aan de huidige functie als winkelpand. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een diepe, rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een nieuwe golfpan. De voorgevel is drie raamtraveeën breed en voorzien van een laat negentiende eeuwse lijstgevel met een eclectisch decoratie-schema. De pui is modern. Op de verdieping bevindt zich voor de middentravee een segmentvormig balkon met openslaande balkondeuren en een sierlijk smeedijzeren hekwerk. De drie vensters zijn rechtgesloten en samengevat in stuc lijstwerk, in de vorm van een 'Serliana'. De drie vensters hebben een doorlopend bovenkalf, bezet met rozetten. Het boogveld van het tympaan boven het middelste venster is versierd met stucwerk in hoogreliëf waarin schilddragende putti zijn uitgebeeld. De muurdammen van de bovenste verdieping en de kroonlijst zijn bezet met florale motieven, vazen en rank- en loofwerk. De kroonlijst draagt een geprofileerde bakgoot. Introduction CAFE, situated in the closed, eastern gable wall of the Herestraat, built as 'Café Suisse' in 1893 designed by Groningen architect P.M.A. Huurman in a richly decorated, eclectic building style. On the storey there is before the central bay a segmental balcony with bi-fold balcony doors and an elegant wrought-iron balustrade. The three windows are rectilinear and grouped in stucco moulding, in the form of a 'Serliana'. The three windows have a continuous fanlight, fitted with rosettes. The arch field of the tympanum above the middle window is decorated with stucco work in high relief in which are depicted putti bearing shields. The wall sections of the upper storey and the cornice are fitted with floral motifs, vases and foliage and scrollwork. The cornice carries a profiled brick gutter. Assessment CAFE, now retail premises, with a carefully designed eclectic cornice-topped facade designed by Groningen architect P.M.A. Huurman, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design and the rare composition of the facade.
