Inleiding BIOSCOOP, gesitueerd in de aaneengesloten zuidelijke gevelwand van de Grote Markt, gebouwd in 1929 in opdracht van de combinatie J. Oostenrijk, B.H. Mekel en erven Bronda, naar ontwerp van G. Saville in een bouwstijl met elementen van de Art Déco en de Amsterdamse School. Het interieur is van ondergeschikt belang. Het gebouw wordt momenteel gerestaureerd (1994) en zal weer in gebruik worden genomen als theater. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak. In de gevel is een gele baksteen verwerkt. Het gevelvlak wordt verlevendigd door in het vlak verspringende delen en lisenen, waardoor een geometrisch patroon in het totale vlak is ontstaan. Een zeventredige inpandige trap leidt naar een brede portiek onder een rechthoekig bakstenen balkon op een betonnen plaat. Midden op de verdieping bevindt zich een groot staand venster met een fijne, geometrische roedeverdeling en ingevuld met gekleurd glas. Het overige gevelvlak wordt geopend door rechthoekige vensters en vensterreeksen van verschillend formaat onder rollagen. De gevelbeëindiging verloopt sprongsgewijs. Op driekwart hoogte van de gevel is een reclamebalk in ijzer en neonbuis aangebracht: Grand Theatre. Waardering Bioscooptheater, genaamd Grand Theatre, gebouwd in de bouwstijl van de verstrakte Amsterdamse School met elementen van de Art Déco-stijl uit de jaren twintig, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde. Bovendien is het gebouw als voormalige bioscoop tevens van grote betekenis voor de Groninger cultuurgeschiedenis.

Introduction CINEMA, situated in the adjoining southern facade wall of the Grote Markt, built in 1929 on behalf of the combination J. Oostenrijk, B.H. Mekel and heirs Bronda, designed by G. Saville in a building style with elements of Art Deco and the Amsterdam School. The interior is of secondary importance. The building is currently being restored (1994) and will be brought back into use as a theatre. Description The building is constructed from a rectangular floor plan and comprises three storeys under a flat roof. Yellow brick is used in the facade. The facade surface is enlivened by parts and pilasters that recede within the plane, creating a geometric pattern in the overall surface. A seven-step internal staircase leads to a wide portico under a rectangular brick balcony on a concrete slab. In the middle of the upper floor there is a large tall window with fine, geometric glazing bars filled with coloured glass. The rest of the facade surface is opened by rectangular windows and window series of different sizes under roll mouldings. The facade termination slopes stepwise. At three-quarters height of the facade a metal and neon advertisement panel has been installed: Grand Theatre. Evaluation Cinema-theatre, called Grand Theatre, built in the style of the refined Amsterdam School with elements of the Art Deco style from the twenties, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value.
