Inleiding WINKELWOONHUIS, gesitueerd in de gesloten, westelijke gevelwand van de Gelkingestraat, gebouwd in circa 1885 in een rijk versierde, eclectische bouwstijl. Sinds 1980 is het gebouw in gebruik als restaurant met woningen en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Het voormalige winkelpui is deels nog oorspronkelijk. Omschrijving Het boven de aangrenzende panden hoog uitstekende gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak. De voorgevel is vier raamtraveeën breed en opgemetseld uit roodbruine baksteen. De houten winkelpui is geplaatst op een lage borstwering. De flankerende pilasters zijn zowel vlak als gecanneleerd. Gepaarde Ionische kapitelen steunen de architraaf. De verdiept geplaatste winkeldeur in het midden heeft aan weerszijden hoge winkelvensters. Links is de toegang naar de verdieping met kalf en bovenlicht. De verdiepingen hebben op de hoeken pilasters in stuc. Op de eerste verdieping zijn de pilasters voorzien van blokken en spiegels. Op de tweede verdieping zijn zij gecanneleerd en voorzien van composiet-kapitelen. De vier vensters op de eerste verdieping worden verbonden door een dorpelband in kunststeen. De borstweringen hieronder zijn voorzien van balusters. De segmentboogvormig gesloten bovenlichten van de vensters zijn voorzien van geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk met figuratieve sluitstenen. Het lijstwerk rust op lijstkapiteeltjes. De overgang naar de tweede verdieping wordt aangegeven door een geprofileerde cordonlijst met terracotta decoratie in de vorm van een slangmotief. De rondboogvensters op de tweede verdieping hebben geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk met sluitstenen. Ook hier zijn de lijstkapitelen met rozetten aanwezig. De borstweringen onder de dorpelband zijn voorzien van bosseringen. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een rijk gedecoreerde kroonlijst, bestaande uit een fries van triglyfen en metopen. De metopen zijn voorzien van rozetten of gebosseerde velden. De kroonlijst ondersteunt een geprofileerde bakgoot op schijnklossen. Introduction SHOP-DWELLING HOUSE, situated in the closed, western facade of the Gelkingestraat, built around 1885 in a richly decorated, eclectic building style. The building, projecting high above the adjoining structures, is erected on a rectangular plan and has three storeys under a truncated hipped roof. The front facade is four window bays wide and built of reddish-brown brick. The wooden shop front is placed on a low parapet. The flanking pilasters are both flat and fluted. Paired Ionic capitals support the architrave. The set-back shop door in the centre has tall shop windows on either side. On the left is the access to the upper storey with calf's eye window and fanlight. The upper storeys have pilasters in stucco at the corners. On the first storey the pilasters are provided with blocks and panels. On the second storey they are fluted and provided with composite capitals. The four windows on the first storey are connected by a sill band in artificial stone. The parapets below are fitted with balusters. The segment arch-shaped fanlights of the windows are provided with profiled stucco moulding with figurative keystones. The moulding rests on small moulded capitals. The transition to the second storey is marked by a profiled cordon with terracotta decoration in the form of a serpent motif. The round arch windows on the second storey have profiled stucco moulding with keystones. Here too are moulded capitals with rosettes. The parapets under the sill band are provided with bossage. The facade is concluded by a richly decorated cornice, consisting of a frieze of triglyphs and metopes. The metopes are provided with rosettes or bossed fields. The cornice supports a profiled fascia gutter on modillions.
Valuation
SHOP-DWELLING HOUSE, designed in a richly decorated, eclectic building style with characteristics of neo-classicism, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value, in particular because of the fine facade composition and the decoration scheme executed in it. Furthermore, the building, by virtue of its design, forms an architecturally valuable element in the western facade of the Gelkingestraat in Groningen.
