Inleiding WINKELWOONHUIS, gesitueerd op de hoek van de aaneengesloten bebouwing van de Oosterstraat en de Carolieweg, gebouwd in 1906-1907 in opdracht van A. Drenth naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect A.Th. van Elmpt in Art-Nouveau-stijl met elementen van de Sezession-stijl. Het gebouw is thans nog in gebruik als kapsalon met woning. Omschrijving Het markante gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak. De gevel wordt afgesloten door een platte kroonlijst in stuc, een overstekende bakgoot op klossen en een balustrade vanbewerkte natuurstenen penanten waartussen karakteristiek ijzeren hekwerk met gestileerde bloemmotieven is geplaatst. De gevels zijn op de begane grond opgetrokken uit een oranje-rode verblendsteen. De plint is met hardsteen bekleed en voorzien van souterrain-lichtopeningen. Ter hoogte van de middendorpel is een band in decoratief metselverband aangebracht. Het gehele gevelvlak wordt door een vijftal pilasters geleed. Op de begane grond zijn de pilasters gecanneleerd en voorzien van stuc-reliëfs in Sezession-stijl, voorstellende vrouwenkoppen met floraal krulwerk. De omlopende cordonband tussen de verdiepingen is bedekt met een onderdorpelband met afzaat. De gevel van de bovenste verdieping is opgetrokken uit een witte verblendsteen en geleed met banden en pilasters in stuc met kransen in stuc-reliëf. Vier vensters op de eerste verdieping zijn van lijstwerk voorzien. Daartussen zijn ijzeren hekdelen met gestileerde bloemmotieven aangebracht. Waardering Winkelwoonhuis, vormgegeven in een bouwstijl met sterke kenmerken van de Art Nouveau, met name in de decoraties in de gevels met invloeden van de Weense Sezession naar ontwerp van de bekende Groninger architect A.Th. van Elmpt, van algemeen belang vanwege zijn cultuurhistorische en grote architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp. Introduction SHOP-HOUSE, situated on the corner of the continuous built environment of Oosterstraat and Carolieweg, built in 1906-1907 on behalf of A. Drenth after a design by Groningen architect A.Th. van Elmpt in Art Nouveau style with elements of Secession style. The building is still in use as a hairdressing salon with residence. Description The striking building is constructed on a rectangular ground plan and has three storeys under a flat roof. The facade is finished with a flat cornice in stucco, an overhanging gutter on corbels and a balustrade with worked natural stone panatiles between which characteristic ironwork with stylised floral motifs is placed. The facades are built of orange-red header brick on the ground floor. The plinth is clad with hard stone and fitted with basement light openings. At the level of the middle lintel, a band in decorative bonding has been applied. The entire facade is subdivided by five pilasters. On the ground floor the pilasters are fluted and fitted with stucco reliefs in Secession style, depicting female heads with floral scrollwork. The running cordon band between the storeys is covered with a lintel band with an offset. The facade of the top storey is built of white header brick and subdivided with bands and pilasters in stucco with wreaths in stucco relief. Four windows on the first storey are provided with cornicing. Between them are iron railing sections with stylised floral motifs. Valuation Shop-house, designed in an architectural style with strong characteristics of Art Nouveau, particularly in the decorations in the facades with influences of Viennese Secession after a design by the well-known Groningen architect A.Th. van Elmpt, of general importance because of its cultural-historical and great architectural-historical value because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design.
