Introduction CLOTHING WAREHOUSE WITH RESIDENTIAL STOREYS AND ENTRANCE PORTICO WITH GATE, component of the continuous, predominantly older built environment forming the northern facade of Brugstraat, built in 1904-1905 on behalf of textile merchant L. de Vries Hzn. after a design by Groningen architects K. & G. Hoekzema in Art Nouveau style. The glazed tile panels of the frieze were manufactured by tile factory Rozenburg from Den Haag. In the right panel the signature of the factory is displayed. The shopfront was replaced in 1956 by the current one, which is not eligible for protection. Description The very monumental building is constructed on a rectangular ground plan and has three storeys under a clipped hipped roof, covered with black barrel tiles. The facades are finished with a profiled wooden gutter, which is decorated with wrought iron gutter anchors. The front facade, built of white header brick, has a strictly symmetrical arrangement of windows and bay windows and is six bays wide. Next to the renewed shopfront is a very far left entrance portico under a segmental arch with the staircase to the storeys. Carved little monkeys are incorporated into the hard stone corbels of the portico. The portico can be closed by a nicely worked wrought iron gate in which the curve of the segmental arch that covers the portico recurs. The two bay window bays over two storeys are crowned by built-up gable tops in which small loggias with balconies are incorporated. The paired round arches rest on natural stone columns with cube capitals. All windows are straight-headed and have sills of glazed moulded stone and roll courses of yellow header brick. Plinth blocks, capping slabs of the gable tops, upper lintel bands on the second storey and a cordon band that closes the shopfront are of natural stone. Between the gable tops are three tripartite glazed tile panels with representations symbolising trade and industry: on the left a beehive, in the middle two peacocks with white lilies and on the right a caduceus.
