Inleiding
WONINGCOMPLEX, bestaande uit een reeks van zes aaneengeschakelde herenhuizen, onderdeel uitmakend van de gesloten zuidelijke gevelwand van de H.W. Mesdagstraat in het hart van de rond de eeuwwisseling aangelegde Schildersbuurt, gebouwd in 1908 in opdracht van F. Roffel naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect G. Hoekzema Kzn. in de stijl van de overgangsarchitectuur. De woningen zijn thans nog in gebruik als woningen.
Omschrijving
Het huizenblok bestaat uit een souterrain en drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak en de woningen zijn opgetrokken vanuit rechthoekige plattegronden. Uniform opgezette reeks met sterk gevarieerde gevels van de individuele woningen. De deurtraveeën worden afgesloten door een geprofileerde houten bakgoot op klossen. De gevels zijn afwisselend opgetrokken uit gele, witte en oranjekleurige verblendsteen en rode perssteen en hebben een hardstenen plint. Het souterrain van nrs. 28 en 30 is gestuct en voorzien van schijnvoegen en afgesloten met een geprofileerde lijst. De gevelwand wordt verder gekenmerkt door een rijkelijke toepassing van dorpelbanden van gekleurde baksteen, houten erkers, balkons en loggia's met gemetselde balustrades. De vensters zijn afwisselend rechtgesloten of rondboog- en segmentboogvormig gesloten met strekken, ontlastingsbogen en rollagen van gekleurde baksteen. Sommige vensters hebben bovenlichten met glas-in-lood. Erg karakteristiek zijn de trappenhuisvensters boven de toegangen met een waaiervormige of rondboogvormige roedeverdeling, ingevuld met gekleurd glas. De bel étage-vensters van nrs. 20 en 24 hebben bewerkte hardstenen borstweringen en vensterbanken op consoles. HOUSING COMPLEX, consisting of a series of six terraced townhouses, forming part of the closed southern facade wall of the H.W. Mesdagstraat in the heart of the Schildersbuurt laid out around the turn of the century, built in 1908 on commission of F. Roffel after design by the Groningen architect G. Hoekzema Kzn. in the style of transitional architecture. The dwellings are currently still in use as dwellings.
Description
The row of houses consists of a basement and three storeys under a flat roof and the dwellings are constructed on rectangular ground plans. Uniformly arranged series with strongly varied facades of the individual dwellings. The door bays are closed off by a profiled wooden roof gutter on corbels. The facades are alternately constructed from yellow, white and orange-coloured facing brick and red pressed brick and have a sandstone plinth. The basement of nos. 28 and 30 is stuccoed and provided with false joints and closed off with a profiled moulding. The facade wall is further characterised by rich application of window-sill bands of coloured brick, wooden bay windows, balconies and loggias with mortared balustrades. The windows are alternately closed with straight angles or round arch and segmental arch forms with stretchers, relieving arches and brick courses of coloured brick. Some windows have fanlights with leaded glass. Very characteristic are the stairwell windows above the entrances with a fan-shaped or round arch-shaped glazing bar pattern, filled with coloured glass. The bel étage windows of nos. 20 and 24 have worked sandstone parapets and window-sills on consoles. The arrangement of the rear facades, constructed from red brick, is still original with rectangular conservatories on wooden plinths; the conservatory on no. 30 has been removed.
