Inleiding
ELECTRICITEITSCENTRALE gebouwd in 1912 en uitgebreid in 1919, in opdracht van het Ministerie van Justitie en naar ontwerp van W.C. Metzelaar. De waarde van het gebouw wordt aanmerkelijk versterkt door de vrijwel complete en originele inrichting en installatie bestaande uit een 100 PK Crossley gasgenerator, een 150 PK Kromhout dieselmotor met een 100 Kw dynamo, in marmer vervatte controlepanelen met aan de achterzijde (in een apart vertrek) geplaatste zekeringkasten met toebehoren.
In 1912 kreeg het gebouw een turfgestookte 50 PK Crossley zuiggasgenerator. Het daarvoor noodzakelijk gas werd geleverd door een in het voorgebouw, op zolder geplaatste (inmiddels verdwenen) turf-vergas-installatie. In 1919 werd het gebouw uitgebreid en werd de 100 PK Crossley zuiggasgenerator bijgeplaatst. Een laatste uitbreiding van het vermogen werd in 1934 gerealiseerd toen de 50 PK Crossley werd vervangen door een van de Zuiderzeewerken afkomstige 150 PK sterke Kromhout dieselmotor. Deze was gekoppeld aan een 100 Kw dynamo.
Momenteel wordt de installatie niet meer gebruikt. Het gebouw doet nog wel dienst als werkplaats voor de elektriciens.
Omschrijving
In sobere en functionele stijl in 1909 gebouwd, uit baksteen opgetrokken gebouw op rechthoekige plattegrond onder twee parallelle zadeldaken met zakgoot; windveren; goot op klossen; staafankers. Het rechter gedeelte is in 1919 in identieke stijl aangebouwd. In de topgevels opgeklampte dubbele deuren met geheng; 4-ruits bovenlichten met stijl; latei; 6-ruits zolderdeuren met geheng en zijlichten; ontlastingsboog. In de overige gevels 15- of 18-ruits ramen met vast kalf. Alle kozijnen voorzien van sober decoratief snijwerk.
In het INTERIEUR onder meer van belang de zware houten spantconstructie; het diagonaal aangebrachte dakbeschot; machinerieen omvattende de deels in de vloer verzonken 100 PK Crossley zuiggasmotor; de niet-verzonken Kromhout dieselmotor met erboven een lier aan I-profiel (in de aangrenzende met geglazuurde tegels belegde ruimte) en de marmeren controlepanelen met aan de achterkant de technische installatie met zekeringkasten.
Waardering
De elektriciteitscentrale met bijbehorende inrichting is van uitzonderlijk industrieel-archeologisch belang, alsook van cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch, typologisch en stedebouwkundig belang. Het gebouw past in de bebouwingsschaal rond de werkplaats De Werf en is van belang voor de geschiedenis van de Rijkswerkinrichting Veenhuizen; tevens van belang als (eertijds) functioneel onderdeel van het uitzonderlijk waardevolle complex Veenhuizen. ELECTRICITY CENTRAL STATION built in 1912 and enlarged in 1919, commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and designed by W.C. Metzelaar. In the gable ends clamped double doors with hinges; 4-pane fanlight with mullion; lintel; 6-pane attic doors with hinges and side lights; relieving arch. In the remaining facades 15- or 18-pane windows with fixed light. All frames provided with sober decorative fretwork.
In the INTERIOR of particular importance are the heavy wooden roof truss structure; the diagonally laid roof boarding; machinery comprising the partly floor-sunken 100 HP Crossley suction gas engine; the non-sunken Kromhout diesel engine with above it a winch on I-profile (in the adjacent space lined with glazed tiles) and the marble control panels with at the back the technical installation with fuse boxes.
Valuation
The electricity central station with attached furnishings is of exceptional industrial-archaeological importance, as well as of cultural-historical, architectural-historical, typological and urban planning importance. The building fits into the building scale around the workshop De Werf and is of importance for the history of the State Reformatory Veenhuizen; also of importance as a (formerly) functional component of the exceptionally valuable complex Veenhuizen. Intact and rare.
