Inleiding
Gebouwd als ARMENWERKHUIS in 1855 door aannemer A. Nijhuis uit Coevorden in een traditionele ambachtelijke stijl. De laatste bewoners (verpleegden) verlieten het huis in 1936. Sinds enkele jaren was het toen al in gebruik als boerderij (samen met de inmiddels verdwenen bijgebouwen). Het gebouw werd in 1973 in opdracht van de gemeente omgebouwd tot ontmoetingsruimte naar ontwerp van Architectenbureau Kampinga uit Assen. Het interieur is sterk aangepast en een bijgebouw werd bijgeplaatst. De bescherming heeft betrekking op het oorspronkelijke exterieur.
Omschrijving
Op een langgerekte grondslag gebaseerd in baksteen opgetrokken armenwerkhuis bestaande uit een bouwlaag en gedekt door een rieten schilddak metgevlochten nok en kuif. Naast traditionele middelen zoals smeedijzeren staafankers, 4-ruits stalramen en opgeklampte deuren met geheng, zijn vooral de rondboogvensters opvallend vanwege de uitkragende ontlastingsbogen op natuurstenen consoles. In de noordelijke zijgevel zijn de ontlastingsbogen van de inmiddels dicht gemetselde keldervensters zichtbaar.

Introduction
Built as a POOR HOUSE in 1855 by contractor A. Nijhuis from Coevorden in a traditional artisanal style. The last residents (paupers) left the house in 1936. For some years it had been in use as a farm (together with the now-disappeared outbuildings). The building was converted in 1973 on commission of the municipality into a meeting space according to a design by Architects' Office Kampinga from Assen. The interior has been substantially adapted and an outbuilding was added. The protection relates to the original exterior.
Description
Built on an elongated ground plan in brick, a poor house consisting of one storey and covered by a thatched hipped roof with woven ridge and eaves. Alongside traditional means such as wrought-iron bar wall anchors, 4-pane barn windows and fixed doors with hinges, the round-arched windows are particularly striking because of the projecting relief arches on natural stone consoles. In the northern side gable, the relief arches of the meanwhile bricked-up cellar windows are visible.
Valuation
The former poor house is of cultural-historical importance because of the distinctive expression of a typical socio-economic and spiritual development; of architectural-historical importance because of the typological development and because of its rarity.
