Inleiding
In 1884 gebouwd als TOLHUIS aan de in hetzelfde jaar aangelegde straatweg Roden-Peize-Groningen, naar ontwerp van architect A. Schotanus (Zuidhorn) en in opdracht van de gemeente Peize. Het werk is uitgevoerd door aannemer H. Sijdzes uit Farmsum. Inmiddels is het tolhuis als woonhuis in gebruik waarmee de oorspronkelijke indeling met bergruimte, koe- en varkensstal verdwenen en de zijgevels vernieuwd zijn.
Omschrijving
Symmetrisch opgezet, zich naar achteren toe verbredend bouwvolume van een bouwlaag en gedekt door een aan achterzijde afgewolfd zadeldak belegd met gegolfde rode pannen; schoorsteen; windveren en decoratief bewerkte makelaar in topgevel. Gevelopbouw van het voorste gedeelte met aangestreken plint, opgaand metselwerk van "gevelhardgrauw waalsteen met ingemetselde lagen van cementsteen"; decoratiefmetselwerk in topgevel; getoogde ramen (van oorsprong 6-ruits schuif- of draairamen) met daarboven hanekam met blokmotief afgedekt door een gepleisterde waterlijst. Centraal in de topgevel van oorsprong een eikehouten tariefbord; daarboven het jaartal 1884 in pleisterwerkomlijsting.

Built in 1884 as a TOLLHOUSE on the street road Roden-Peize-Groningen laid out in the same year, designed by architect A. Schotanus (Zuidhorn) and commissioned by the municipality of Peize. The work was executed by contractor H. Sijdzes from Farmsum. Meanwhile the tollhouse has been in use as a residential house whereby the original division with storage space, cow and pig sty has disappeared and the side facades have been renewed.
Description
Symmetrically arranged building volume widening towards the back, of one storey and covered by a half-hipped saddle roof laid with corrugated red tiles; chimney; wind vanes and decoratively worked barge board in gable. Facade construction of the front section with struck plinth, rising brickwork of "facade hard-grey ashlar stone with inserted layers of cement stone"; decorative brickwork in gable; arched windows (originally 6-pane sash or casement windows) with above a cock's comb with block motif covered by a rendered drip moulding. Centrally in the gable originally an oak-wood tariff board; above it the year 1884 in rendered work surround.

Tollhouse of general cultural-historical, socio-economic, geographical and typological importance as well as of architectural-historical importance because of its design; further of importance because of its significance for the development of infrastructure and of urban-planning importance because of its prominent siting and the functional connection with the public road.
