Omschrijving
HOOFDGEBOUW.
Blauwe logeerkamer dateren.

Description
MAIN BUILDING. Stately castle in the form of a moated manor house, consisting of a tall rising central building block and lower cross-wings flanking a forecourt on the east side; all covered by hipped roofs. This form is the result of the rebuilding in 1631 of an originally 13th-century castle and of a subsequent rebuilding completed in 1717 which gave the castle as symmetrical a form as possible, but did not essentially change the exterior.
As a product of the above building history the castle externally is a characteristic example of the transition from lively to rigid architecture that began in the years around 1630: rigid because of the absence of towers and gable ends and the application of hipped roofs, but still lively through the chamfered relieving arches above the windows, the numerous roof dormers with pointed small roofs and three round chimneys decorated with natural stone rings and topped by owl-shaped iron ornaments. Front and rear facade contain chamfered sandstone doorways from 1631, the latter being transferred from the wall which until 1717 closed off the forecourt, with omission of its pediment.
Internally the castle contains remarkable interiors from different periods, including the painted beam ceilings and the skilfully constructed doorways in the entrance hall and stairwell from around 1631, the Great Hall with wood panelling and stucco ceilings from around 1717, probably designed by Daniel Marot Sr., the wood panelling from the middle of the 18th century in the so-called Oosterlandse room brought from Zeeland after 1880, a neo-gothic small portal with stuccoed vault from the middle of the 19th century, from which period also the wallpaper and associated furnishing with vegetative pattern in the so-called Blue guest room date.
