Inleiding

Introduction

The double DWELLING HOUSE built in a fairly austere eclectic style originally dates from around 1860. Its present appearance is the result of extensive alteration in 1893. The right entrance section probably comes from the right side facade, which disappeared when the building Brink 30;31 was altered in the early twentieth century. The building underwent extensive internal alteration in 1984 and has since contained residential units. The protection relates only to the main form and the facades in view.

Description

It is a building initially drawn up from a virtually rectangular floor plan, consisting of basement and two storeys beneath a hipped roof covered with glazed (front roof slope) and unglazed Dutch tiles. The bent front facade with arched openings is nine bays wide and is enlivened by plastering. The facade is on the right furnished with a plastered, rusticised basement above a cricket which is provided with flat plaster rendering and a flush door. The basement windows on either side of the main entrance are arched and equipped with window guards and springer and voussoir stones. The entrance section is constructed from a stoop with above it a porch with a date stone within a frame of pilasters with diamond-pointed capitals and twisted half-balusters, as well as an arched porch opening with relief decoration. The original panelled door with pivot pin is embellished with carved work and wrought-iron window ironwork under a profiled calf and arched fanlight. The T-shaped windows in both storeys are provided with voussoir stones and springer stones with grape clusters in relief. The wooden balcony above the entrance is supported on consoles decorated with floral ornaments and has a footplate with profiled edge and a balustrade with twisted balusters between square corner balusters. A porte brisée with framing of pilasters with Composite capitals and relief decoration with plant motifs opens onto it. The facade is terminated by an entablature with small console-like cramps that support the projecting drip moulding. Far right in the facade is an entrance section with a framing probably originating from the original right side facade. The entrance section, which runs with only one pilaster over the original facade and a construction joint, is largely situated in a bay with flat roof, which forms part of the probably early-twentieth-century building Brink 30; 31. This entrance section consists of a new door within a frame of fluted pilasters with small Composite capitals and a profiled upper edge with relief decoration with stylized plant motifs. The whole is crowned by a main cornice with curved, broken pediment.

Valuation

The characteristic building has a well-preserved facade which is a prominent element of the valuable built environment in the town centre, whereby the ensemble value is great. The house also has architectural-historical value as a representative specimen of late nineteenth-century residential architecture for the wealthy bourgeoisie and prosperous middle class in the protected townscape of Assen.
