Inleiding
Het WOONHUIS is ca. 1875 gebouwd in een vrij sobere, voor de bouwtijd karakteristieke eclectische bouwstijl. Het huis, met rechts een giet- en smeedijzeren HEKWERK, is een van de vele waardevolle, voor de gegoede burgerij gebouwde panden aan de Vaart en is representatief voor de snelle ontwikkeling van Assen en de groeiende welstand van vele Assenaren in de negentiende eeuw. Het huis vormt in visueel en architectonisch opzicht een eenheid met het pand Vaart NZ 10, dat waarschijnlijk tegelijkertijd is gebouwd, maar dat niet van rijkswege wordt beschermd.
Omschrijving. De hoofdvorm van het huis is opgetrokken in schone baksteen vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het pand heeft een verdieping onder een met pannen gedekt, afgeknot schilddak met schoorsteenschachten op alle vier nokhoeken. De gevels worden beëindigd door een verkropt entablement en zijn voorzien van getoogde vensters (T-vensters op de verdieping). De vier traveeën brede voorgevel heeft een gepleisterde plint, een smalle cordonlijst en oorspronkelijk met persiennes behangen gevelopeningen met kuif op de profiellijsten. Het twee traveeen brede middenrisaliet heeft een op consoles rustend breed balkon met gietijzeren hekken tussen vierkante, houten hoekbalusters. Op het balkon komen twee porte brisees uit. Het brede, verkropte entablement heeft een uitkragende, geprofileerde kroonlijst. De rechter zijgevel bevat drie gevelopeningen zonder omlijsting onder strekken. Twee van deze vensters zijn voorzien van persiennes. De entree bestaat uit een paneel-vleugeldeur met gietijzeren raamijzers en gedeeld bovenlicht in een portiek met hardstenen stoep en deels met blanke tegels beklede wanden. Rechts van de entree staat een mogelijk toegevoegd, trapezoidevormig avant-corps van okergeel geschilderde, gepleisterde baksteen. Van de drie getoogde vensters hierin is nog een behangen met persiennes. Tegen de achtergevel, die is voorzien van getoogde gevelopeningen onder strekken en een dakgoot op klossen, staat een niet van belang zijnde verdiepingloze aanbouw met plat dak. De linker zijgevel is blind. Aan de straat rechts van het huis staat een waarschijnlijk door de Asser IJzer- en Metaalgieterij vervaardigd negentiende eeuws hek van smeed- en gietijzer tussen op hardstenen blokken staande, gecanneleerde gietijzeren balusters.
Waardering
Het karakteristieke huis (met hekwerk) is een gaaf voorbeeld van voor de bouwtijd representatieve woonhuisarchitectuur voor de gegoede burgerij. Het beeldbepalende pand maakt deel uit van de waardevolle negentiende en vroeg twintigste eeuwse bebouwing aan de Vaart en heeft derhalve grote ensemblewaarde. Introduction
The DWELLING HOUSE was built c. 1875 in a fairly austere eclecticism style characteristic of the building period. The house, with cast and wrought iron RAILINGS on the right, is one of many valuable properties built for the wealthy citizens on the Vaart and is representative of the rapid development of Assen and the growing prosperity of many Assen residents in the nineteenth century. The house forms a visual and architectural unity with the property at Vaart NZ 10, which was probably built at the same time, but which is not protected as a national monument.
Description. The main form of the house is constructed in fair-faced brick from a rectangular ground plan. The property has one storey under a hipped roof covered with tiles with chimney stacks at all four roof corners. The facades are terminated by a corbelled entablature and are provided with arched windows (T-windows on the storey). The four-bay wide front facade has a plastered plinth, a narrow cornice and originally window openings with shutters hung with jalousies with a hood on the moulded lintels. The two-bay wide central risalit has a broad balcony resting on consoles with cast iron railings between square wooden corner balusters. Two porte brisees open onto the balcony. The broad corbelled entablature has a projecting moulded cornice. The right side facade contains three window openings without moulding under lintels. Two of these windows are provided with shutters. The entrance consists of a panelled door with cast iron frame members and divided fanlight in a portico with stone step and walls partly clad with plain tiles. To the right of the entrance stands a possibly added trapezoidal avant-corps of ochre-painted plastered brick. Of the three arched windows within it, one is still hung with shutters. Against the rear facade, which is provided with arched window openings under lintels and a roof gutter on brackets, stands a one-storey addition of no significance with a flat roof. The left side facade is blank. To the street to the right of the house stands a nineteenth century fence of wrought and cast iron, probably made by the Asser Iron and Metal Foundry, between cannelated cast iron balusters standing on stone blocks.
Valuation
The characteristic house (with railings) is a good example of residential architecture for the wealthy citizens representative of its building period. The visually defining property is part of the valuable nineteenth and early twentieth century building stock on the Vaart and therefore has great group value. It is also part of the protected cityscape of Assen.
