'De Volharding'. Vijf bouwlagen tellend, platafgedekt KANTOORGEBOUW met winkels en magazijnruimten alsmede een vergaderzaal en tot 1938 een tandheelkundige kliniek, en met veel ruimte voor lichtreclames aan de buitenzijde, gebouw in een gemengd Nieuwe Zakelijke, constructivistisch-expressionistische trant naar ontwerp van J.W.E. Buijs en J.B. Lursen in 1927-'28 ten behoeve van de Cooperatieve verbruiks-, voortbrengings- en voorzorgsvereniging 'de Volharding' u.a., en opgetrokken als een gewapend betonskeletconstructie met bekleding van zwart graniet en in aluminium gevatte melkglas en prismaglastegels en met toepassing van vrijwel over de gehele breedte doorlopende vensterstroken - afgewisseld door vier lichtbakken waar door middel van zinken schabloonletters lichtreclames konden worden aangebracht - op een langs scheve lijnen gerooide plattegrond rondom een lichthof aan de overigens gesloten NW-zijde; de haaks op de Grote Markt en Grote Marktstraat staande zijgevels - aansluitend op de met baksteen beklede muurdammen te weerszijden van de vensterstroken - zijn vrijwel geheel blind en witgepleisterd.
De half-onderkelderde beganegrondverdieping - zelf dubbelhoog - is boven de etalages voorzien van luifels die op de hoek van Grote Markt en Grote Marktstraat samenkomen ter markering van de aldaar gesitueerde ingangen; ter verlichting van de winkelruimten zijn boven de luifels glazen door vierkante ruitjes gelede friezen aangebracht.
De drie bouwlagen tellende bovenbouw wordt op dezelfde Z-hoek geaccentueerd door de verticale geledingen van de uitspringende liftschacht en het aan de Grote Marktstraat nog verder uitspringende trappenhuis, die evenals de bovenlichtfriezen van kleine vierkante ruitjes zijn voorzien en zwartbetegelde hoekpartijen, en die uittorenen boven de drie, respectievelijk vijf vakken brede kantoorgevels aan weerszijden. Het geheel wordt bekroond door een samenstel van op een aan het werk van W.M. Dudok herinnerende wijze in elkaar grijpende, horizontale en verticale beglaasde, schotachtige bouwvolumes die ten behoeve van reclamedoeleinden zijn aangebracht zodanig dat het horizontale blauwbeglaasde gedeelte evenwijdig is met de Grote Markt en aan de westzijde in een verticaal gedeelte wordt voortgezet waartegen het andere, boven alles uittorenende verticale gedeelte aanleunt en als het ware over het horizontale gedeelte, dat aan de onderzijde van een gele glaslaag is voorzien, heengrijpt.
De gevels aan de lichthof worden elk door een reeks vensters van steeds ander formaat, maar steeds gebaseerd op eenzelfde maateenheid, per bouwlaag doorbroken.
Kantoorgebouw met winkel- en magazijnruimten van bijzondere architectuur vanwege de synthese van Nieuw Zakelijke en constructivistisch-expressionistische principes - waarvoor respectievelijk de toepassing van een gewapend betonskelet met niet-dragende, zoveel mogelijk van glas voorziene gevels en de plastische groepering van langgerekte, cubische bouwvolumes kenmerkend zijn - alsmede vanwege de decoratieve gevel-uitmonstering door de bekleding met graniet, gekleurde tegels en diverse soorten glas en de lichtreclames, voorts van belang als een van de vroegste en zeldzame voorbeelden van een welbewuste, combinatie van verschillende functies in een gebouw dat als hoogbouw is geconstrueerd, met volledige integratie van de toenmalige mogelijkheden van lichtreclames waarbij in de vormgeving bewust een verschillend effect bij dag en bij nacht is nagestreefd, en dat bovendien in opdracht van een cooperatieve vereniging tot stand is gekomen.

Description
'De Volharding'. Five-storey, flat-roofed OFFICE BUILDING with shops and warehouse spaces as well as a meeting hall and until 1938 a dental clinic, and with much space for illuminated advertisements on the exterior, building in a mixed New Functionalism, constructivist-expressionist manner designed by J.W.E. Buijs and J.B. Lursen in 1927-'28 for the Cooperative consumption, production and welfare association 'de Volharding' and others, and erected as a reinforced concrete skeleton structure with cladding of black granite and milk glass set in aluminium and prisma glass tiles and with the application of window strips running continuously over almost the entire width - alternated by four lightboxes by means of which illuminated advertisements could be applied using zinc stencilled letters - on a ground plan with oblique lines on a site surrounding a light well on the otherwise closed NW side; the end facades at right angles to the Grote Markt and Grote Marktstraat - adjoining the brick-clad wall piers on either side of the window strips - are almost entirely blind and whitewashed.
The half-basement ground storey - itself double-height - is provided above the shop windows with canopies that meet at the corner of Grote Markt and Grote Marktstraat marking the entrances situated there; for lighting the shop spaces, glass friezes divided by square panes are installed above the canopies.
The three-storey upper structure is accentuated at the same S corner by the vertical divisions of the projecting lift shaft and the staircase projecting further still at Grote Marktstraat, which like the fanlight friezes of small square panes are provided with black-tiled corner sections, and which tower above the three and respectively five bays wide office facades on either side. The whole is crowned by an assembly of, in a manner reminiscent of the work of W.M. Dudok, interlocking horizontal and vertical glazed partition-like building volumes that have been installed for advertising purposes such that the horizontal blue-glazed section is parallel with the Grote Markt and on the west side is continued in a vertical section against which the other, towering above all else vertical section rests and as it were interlocks over the horizontal section, which is provided on its underside with a yellow glass layer.
The facades facing the light well are each broken by a series of windows of constantly varying format, but always based on the same unit of measurement, per storey.
