Inleiding.
Voormalige Hoogduitsche Synagoge uit 1843-1844 van de Nederlands-Israelitische Gemeente in neo-classicistische stijl naar ontwerp van de architect A. Roodenburg. Het pand is niet in de rooilijn van de Wagenstraat gesitueerd maar ligt vrij op een achter de Wagenstraat gelegen binnenterrein. Sedert 1979 is het in gebruik als moskee van de Turks-Islamitische Vereniging. NB. De voor de functie als moskee recentelijk voor de voormalige synagoge geplaatste minaretten vallen buiten de bescherming. Omschrijving.
Voormalige synagoge op rechthoekige plattegrond bestaande uit een bouwlaag onder een met pannen gedekt schilddak. De in schoon metselwerk opgetrokken gevels zijn sober uitgevoerd. Tegen de voorgevel, die door een bakstenen fronton met oculus wordt bekroond, is een zuilenportiek bestaande uit twee paar Toscaanse zuilen met hoofdgestel en fronton. De zuilen hebben hardstenen basementen en gepleisterde bakstenen schachten. Aan weerszijden van deze portiek wordt de gevel horizontaal geleed door een hoofdgestel. Op de hoeken in baksteen gebosseerde versieringen. Ingangen met dubbele deuren en hoofdgestellen in de portiek en aan weerskanten daarvan. In de gevel twee natuurstenen gevelstenen met jaartallen. De zijgevels bezitten langgerekte rondboogvensters met glas-in-lood. Het inwendige is een gepleisterde eenbeukige ruimte met aan een der lange zijden en aan de korte zijden galerijen met houten balustraden. De middenruimte wordt overdekt door een gestucadoord koofplafond met steekkappen. Boven de galerijen gestucadoorde houten ribloze kruisgewelven. Aan de beide smalle kanten worden de galerijen van de hoofdruimte gescheiden door slanke Ionische zuilen met entablementen; aan een der lange zijden dubbele pilasters met Ionische kapitelen, aan de andere lange zijde tussen de galerij en de middenruimte pijlers die elk versierd zijn met dezelfde paarsgewijs geplaatste Ionische pilasters. Waardering.
Voormalige synagoge van cultuurhistorisch belang vanwege de hieraan verbonden herinnering aan de Nederlands-Israelitische Gemeente. Het is architectuurhistorisch en typologisch waardevol als een zeldzaam en gaaf bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een synagoge in neo-classicistische stijl.

Former synagogue on rectangular ground plan consisting of one storey under a hipped roof covered with tiles. The facades, constructed in fair brickwork, are executed in a sober manner. Against the front facade, which is crowned by a brick pediment with oculus, is a columned portico consisting of two pairs of Tuscan columns with entablature and pediment. The columns have ashlar bases and plastered brick shafts. On either side of this portico the facade is articulated horizontally by an entablature. On the corners decorative brickwork bossage. Entrances with double doors and entablatures in the portico and on either side thereof. In the facade two natural stone facade stones with dates. The side facades have elongated semicircular windows with stained glass. The interior is a plastered single-nave space with galleries on one of the long sides and on the short sides with wooden balustrades. On the two narrow sides the galleries are separated from the main space by slender Ionic columns with entablatures; on one of the long sides double pilasters with Ionic capitals, on the other long side between the gallery and the central space piers each decorated with the same pairwise placed Ionic pilasters. Former synagogue of cultural historical importance because of the memory associated with it of the Dutch-Israelite Congregation. It is architecturally and typologically valuable as a rare and well-preserved example of a synagogue in neo-classical style.
