Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Royal Household Archive from 1895-1897 on elongated ground plan to the design of J.P.E. Hoeufft van Velsen, Intendant of the Royal Palaces in neo-renaissance and intended as Archive and Library of the Royal Household. The building is freely situated in the garden of Paleis Noordeinde. Description.
The Royal Household Archive is a symmetrical and elongated building constructed in internationally oriented neo-renaissance style. It consists of a higher and prominent central section covered by a mansard roof between lower side wings. In the brickwork hard stone bands are laid, alternated by string courses, parapets, frames and sculpture in Escauzijn natural stone. The natural stone was supplied from France; the sculpture is from the firm Civet, Crouet, Gautier et Cie in Paris. The main façade of the central pavilion has a rusticated basement and is three window bays wide. Between coupled Ionic pilasters on the storey are wooden round arch windows in profiled natural stone mouldings. The entrance section is flanked by two Tuscan wall columns with above them a main entablature with on either side two torsos carrying armour and helmet. On the frieze in a cartouche of the main entablature the inscriptions 'Library' and 'Household Archive' are noted. The entrance section is crowned by a curved pediment in which an oculus and above it a crown is placed. In the spandrels of the round arch windows are medallions. In the frieze sections above are three identical cartouches, of which the central one contains the inscription 'Orange Nassau' and the left and right respectively the dates of the beginning and end of construction. The cartouches are, like above the entrance, executed in granite. The side wings each consist of basement and three storeys under a cut-off hipped roof and are four window bays wide. The window strips in the front façades are vertically articulated and have hard stone two-light frames, crowned by semicircular wooden roof dormers with ornamental vases. The central pavilion encompasses among others the entrance, the reception section and the office section. The archive space, set up as a depot of limited scope, based among others on the State Archive of Den Bosch and the Albertinum of Dresden, is housed in the side wings and is built according to the warehouse system. The floors consist of wrought iron open grilles, this to improve the entry of daylight; the step ladders are executed in iron.
Evaluation
The Royal Household Archive is of cultural-historical value due to its function as archive and library of the Royal Household. It is architecturally and typologically valuable as an intact preserved example of archive building from the end of the 19th century in international neo-renaissance. An important added value is formed by the location in the Palace garden together with Paleis Noordeinde and the Royal Stables.
