Inleiding.

Introduction.

Building with rear house, built in 1901-1902 designed by architect J.W. Bosboom for master blacksmith E. Beekman and named villa Elena. Maliestraat 12/12a is built in transition style; the rear house at Hooistraat 9 shows the characteristics of chalet style and Art Nouveau. The building on the Maliestraat is incorporated in the street frontage with contiguous development; the rear house is separated from the water of the Nieuwe Uitleg by a garden. Description.

Maliestraat 12/12a has two window bays and consists of three storeys with a loft storey. The ground floor is occupied by a passageway to the rear house, framed by wooden pilasters with entablature. The facade has natural stone bands and slightly arched windows with alternating keystones and glazing bars in the fanlights. The gable top shows crenellations with saddle-back cappings. The rear house, numbered Hooistraat 9, has three storeys with a loft storey in the high hipped roof that adjoins on the right against a chimney stack. Particularly notable is the rich design of the rear elevation, although this was the representative front facade. The brickwork of this facade is alternated by bands of yellow facing brick. The ground floor is opened on the left as a portico, above it the right bay of the piano nobile has a wooden oriel in Art Nouveau forms with leaded glass. In the fanlight a wooden balcony railing. In front of the left bays a balcony with wooden balustrade. The storey above the piano nobile is opened in both window bays by loggias. The projecting eave rests on decorated wooden corbels and is above the right bay developed into a pointed gable in chalet style with in the corners below the eave the initials of the builder, the letters E and B. The garden in front of the rear house is closed off on the quay wall by a wrought-iron railing from the time of construction of the house. Valuation.

The building, consisting of front and rear house, is architecturally-historically valuable as an example of transition style and Art Nouveau. The rear house has an important role in the distinctive appearance of the notable historic canal view of the Nieuwe Uitleg-Houtweg. Main form, detailing and the applied material are intact.
