Inleiding.
Bouwblok uit 1902 op complexe plattegrond bestaande uit vier casco's met van oorsprong zes woningen, gesitueerd op de hoek van de Laan van Meerdervoort en de Waldeck Pyrmontkade, ontworpen door architect J. Olthuis in overgangsarchitectuur met Art Nouveau decoraties.
NB. Later is het bouwblok opgesplitst in negen woningen.
Omschrijving.
Bouwblok in rijke overgangsarchitectuur met van oorsprong zes woningen. Aan de Laan van Meerdervoort hebben de nummers 164-164a, 166-166a, 168 en 168a vier bouwlagen met platte daken, overgaand op de hoek naar de nummers 168a en 168b met drie bouwlagen en een kapverdieping.
De gevels kenmerken zich door wisselende beëindigingen en een a-symmetrische opbouw met houten en stenen erkers, balkons en inpandige loggia's; de hoekpartij is hoger opgetrokken en heeft een loggia met frontonachtige bekroning. De houten schuifvensters met rechte en getoogde beëindigingen, brede en smalle afmetingen bezitten bovenlichten met kleine roedeverdeling. De gevels aan de straatzijde zijn in rode verblendsteen opgetrokken en rijkelijk voorzien van polychrome tegeltableau met plantaardige decoraties in zwikken boven de vensters en in blindnissen. De tegeltableaus zijn door de firma Rozenberg uit Den Haag vervaardigd. Natuursteen is gebruikt voor plinten, negblokken, vensterlateien, sierbanden en gevelbeëindigingen. De winkelpui op de hoek in travertin dateert uit de jaren dertig De achtergevels zijn in gewone baksteen opgetrokken met uitzondering van de achtergevel van de nummers 168a- 168b, die in rode verblendsteen is uitgevoerd.
Waardering.

Building block in rich transitional architecture with originally six dwellings. On the Laan van Meerdervoort, numbers 164-164a, 166-166a, 168 and 168a have four storeys with flat roofs, transitioning at the corner to numbers 168a and 168b with three storeys and a roof storey.
The facades are characterized by alternating terminations and an asymmetrical composition with wooden and stone bay windows, balconies and recessed loggias; the corner section is built higher and has a loggia with a pediment-like crown. The wooden sash windows with straight and arched terminations, broad and narrow dimensions possess fanlights with small glazing bars. The facades on the street side are constructed in red facing brick and richly provided with polychrome tile tableaux with plant decorations in spandrels above the windows and in blind niches. The tile tableaux were made by the firm Rozenburg from The Hague. Natural stone has been used for plinths, negblocks, window lintels, decorative bands and gable terminations. The shopfront at the corner in travertine dates from the nineteen-thirties. The rear facades are constructed in ordinary brickwork with the exception of the rear facade of numbers 168a-168b, which is executed in red facing brick.
Valuation.
The building block is of architectural-historical importance as a well-preserved example of transitional architecture. The polychromed tile tableaux are rare. Also of importance is the significant urban-planning situation on the corner of the Laan van Meerdervoort and the Waldeck Pyrmontkade.
