The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Dwelling consisting of a front house on the Prinses Mariestraat and a rear house on the canal bank of the Mauritskade, built simultaneously with the complex of shop-dwellings on the Prinses Mariestraat 2-4 and 6. The front house in eclectic neo-renaissance from 1882-1883 was designed by H.P. de Swart. The richly decorated neo-renaissance rear house dates from 1885.

Description.

The front house with the facade on the Prinses Mariestraat has three storeys and an attic storey under a continuous, cut-off hipped roof covered with slate. The front facade is constructed in fair-faced brickwork and is five window bays wide; the third is executed as a risalit. On the corners of the facade are brick pilasters. To the left of the main entrance is a large window divided into two by a central mullion with beside it a T-window; to the right of the main entrance likewise a large window divided into two by a central mullion and beside it an entrance. The main entrance is set in a richly profiled frame with two narrow pilasters and volute consoles. On the first and second storey above the entrance are inward-opening glazed panel doors which are set within a richly profiled frame with open balustrade. The risalit ends in a roof dormer with pediment. To the side of the central risalit on the first and second storey are two windows with T-frames.

The facade is terminated by a corniced main cornice with triglyph consoles.

The neo-renaissance rear house on the canal bank has three storeys and an attic storey under a cut-off hipped roof covered with slate. The rear facade constructed in brick possesses corner chains with against the ground floor rustication in hardstone, against the first storey rustication in stucco and against the second storey rendering. The central bay of the bay window has on the second storey an aedicula with the building year 1885, crowned by a curved pediment with shell decoration. The recessed bay has at the level of the two storeys balconies with open balustrades. These balconies rest on heavy volute consoles. The main cornice consists of a frieze with brick mosaic and triglyph consoles and a far protruding wooden cornice. Above the bay window projection in the hipped roof is a chimney with ornamental wall anchor, flanked by two obliquely-standing roof dormers with pediments. The right side facade of the rear house has two round-arched windows which illuminate the stairwell.

Valuation.

Front and rear houses are of architectural-historical importance as valuable examples of neo-renaissance residential architecture; main form, detailing and applied material are intact. A typological and urban-planning valuable feature is the rich execution of the rear facade, bordering the water of the Singelgracht.
