Omschrijving.

Vrouw is opgenomen.

Collette.

Waardering.

Description.

The church of Our Lady of Lourdes (Tweede Messstraat 108) is surrounded by residential buildings on two sides. Between 1912 and 1913, according to a design by Kropholler, the tower base with portal, the Lourdes chapel to its left and the rectory to the right (Berkenbosch Blokstraat 9) were executed. The church itself was completed in 1924-1925; C.M. van Moorsel completed the tower in 1965, according to Kropholler's plans.

The building, executed in brick, bears a high gabled roof with slate tiles between pointed gables. Besides a portal on the Berkenbosch Blokstraat under the tower, there is a portal on the northwest side on the Tweede Messstraat. This corner is accentuated by a high pointed gable in which a terracotta relief depicting Our Lady is incorporated. Next to the priest's choir stands a slender Angelus tower on the Tweede Messstraat with a gabled roof with pointed gables.

Adjacent to this is the sexton's lodge, Tweede Messstraat 110. This building was constructed by C.M. van Moorsel and comprises four storeys under a flat roof. The facade is executed in brick and has on the street side on the first storey seven rectangular windows and on the second storey three pointed arch windows. In the side facade rectangular windows with mullions are present.

The broad nave of the church, illuminated in the side walls by series of four wooden rectangular windows per bay, is covered by a high roof structure consisting of wooden roof trusses with iron bolts and steel plates. The nave is flanked by narrow aisles, which are separated from the central nave by pointed arcade arches on columns of reinforced concrete, faced with brick.

The narrower presbytery has a three-sided closure and has windows in the side facades.

On the Berkenbosch Blokstraat, next to the tower, stands the Lourdes chapel. This has a gabled roof covered with slate tiles, on which a square small tower with inward-sweeping spire is placed. In the brick facade is incorporated, among other things, a tondo with a sculptured relief by Mendes da Costa as a symbol of Christ and against the eaves moulding a blind arch frieze is placed.

Via an extension which is rectangular in form and placed against the building Berkenbosch Blokstraat no. 11, one can reach the daily chapel. It is covered with a gabled roof of slate tiles.

The tower, the base of which was built in 1913 by Kropholler, consists of a brick-clad body and a square superstructure with pointed arch bell-openings and a four-sided spire. Van Moorsel completed this in 1965; moreover according to Kropholler's design.

Internally, the church has, among other things, reliefs on the corners of the priest's choir, which depict, among others, the prophets Malachias and Melchisedech. These were made by W.A. van der Winkel in 1925. Against the closure wall of the presbytery is a wall painting executed in mineral paint with Keim, including depictions of the Holy Trinity by J.N.C. Collette.

Against the aisle walls, Stations of the Cross were installed in 1952. These were made by A. Termotte. Against the piers of the nave are on tiles depictions of the 12 apostles according to a design by A.C. Ninaber van Eyben.

The windows of the nave contain, among other things, stained glass windows by the glazier J. Braendle from 1963, executed by the workshop A.N. de Lint. The communion rails with marble structure and richly decorated ironwork in bronze and copper were made by G.B. Brom in Utrecht in neo-Renaissance style at the end of the 19th century and originate from the former St. Catharinakerk on the Singel in Amsterdam. The interior of the church is executed as fair-faced work in yellow brick with a lining of glazed brick. The Lourdes chapel, covered with wooden roof structure, contains a copy of the Massabielle grotto in Lourdes.

The rectory (Berkenbosch Blokstraat 9) comprises two storeys and has a stepped gable with a gabled roof covered with tiles behind it. On the ground floor on the right side of the facade is a portal with entrance to the rectory; on the left side of the front facade a large cross window with two ten-pane windows. On the first floor three ten-pane windows placed next to each other. In the facade the sculptured inscription "Funda nos in pace" is placed.

Valuation.

Church with inventory, rectory and sexton's residence forming part of the complex on the Tweede Messstraat, Neptunusstraat and the Berkenbosch Blokstraat are of importance as an example of building in the manner of traditionalism. Also of importance within the development of the oeuvre of architect A.J. Kropholler. A typological and ensemble value is formed by the special characteristic of residential buildings and church in a total design. An added value is the important urban planning situation on the Berkenbosch Blokstraat.
