Inleiding.
Vrijliggend bouwblok bestaande uit twee geschakelde herenhuizen gebouwd op een complexe plattegrond, gesitueerd aan een rechthoekig plein aan de Zuidwerflaan en de Van Hoeylaan. J.J.Brandes ontwierp het bouwblok rond 1927 in de stijl van de Nieuwe Haagse School. Rondom de villa's is een groenstrook; de lage tuinmuurtjes vormen de begrenzing met de straat.
Omschrijving.
Twee geschakelde herenhuizen die onder een hoek van 45 graden ten opzichte van de rechthoekige kruising liggen, bestaan uit twee bouwlagen onder platte daken. Kenmerkend voor de hier uitgevoerde rode baksteenarchitectuur is onder meer de kubistische opzet van in elkaar grijpende bouwdelen, verspringende gevelvlakken, de ritmische herhaling van de schoorstenen, de toepassing van overdekte balkons, erkers en terassen, pergola's en lage tuinmuren, de overheersende horizontaliteit in de vorm van betonnen lateien, dorpels, afdekplaten en luifels en het aansmeren van horizontale baksteen met zwarte teer. De tuinmuren en de pergola's vormen een wezenlijk onderdeel van de architectuur waarmee de geleidelijke overgang van binnen naar buiten wordt geaccentueerd. De vensters van no.15 zijn van staal; die van 20 van aluminium.
Waardering.
Twee geschakelde herenhuizen in een architectonisch ontwerp met ommuring en pergola's van architectuurhistorische waarde als een van de zuiverste voorbeelden van de Nieuwe Haagse School. Two semi-detached mansions which lie at an angle of 45 degrees in relation to the rectangular intersection, consist of two storeys under flat roofs. Characteristic of the red brick architecture executed here is among other things the cubist composition of interlocking building elements, projecting facade surfaces, the rhythmic repetition of the chimneys, the application of covered balconies, bay windows and terraces, pergolas and low garden walls, the prevailing horizontality in the form of concrete lintels, sills, coping plates and canopies and the coating of horizontal brickwork with black tar. The garden walls and the pergolas form an essential part of the architecture by which the gradual transition from inside to outside is emphasized. The windows of no. 15 are of steel; those of 20 of aluminium.
