WIJNHUISTOREN. Het Wijnhuis, waarvan alleen de toren over is, stond ter plaatse van een veertiende-eeuwse herberg, die in XV stadswijnhuis werd. Het gebouw, zoals dat tot 1863 bewaard bleef, kwam tot stand tussen 1616 en '27; de toren werd voltooid in 1641 door Edmond Hellenraet. In 1863 werd het Wijnhuis geheel vernieuwd met uitzondering van de portiek aan de L. Hofstraat. In 1920 brandde de toren uit, herbouw vond plaats in 1924. Door de oorlogshandelingen in 1945 werd het gebouw met uitzondering van de toren verwoest: de gehavende portiek viel onder de slopershamer. Herbouw van het Wijnhuis voltooid 1954. Van het Hemony-carillon, gegoten in 1642, worden in het museum nog zes klokken bewaard. De toren bestaat uit drie vierkante stenen geledingen met pilasters en rondbogige nissen, bekroond door een balustrade, waarboven een achtkant met vrijstaande hoekzuilen als overgang naar de uurwerkgeleding met wijzerplaten, die een open koepel draagt, waarin het klokkenspel. De bovenste twee geledingen zijn van hout. Description
WINE HOUSE TOWER. The Wine House, of which only the tower remains, stood on the site of a fourteenth-century inn, which became a town wine house in the XV century. The building, as it remained until 1863, came into being between 1616 and '27; the tower was completed in 1641 by Edmond Hellenraet. In 1863 the Wine House was completely renovated with the exception of the portico on the L. Hofstraat. In 1920 the tower burned out, rebuilding took place in 1924. Due to military action in 1945 the building was destroyed except for the tower: the damaged portico fell to the wreckers. Rebuilding of the Wine House completed 1954. Of the Hemony carillon, cast in 1642, six bells are still preserved in the museum. The tower consists of three square stone tiers with pilasters and round-arched niches, crowned by a balustrade, above which an octagon with free-standing corner columns as transition to the clockwork tier with clock faces, which supports an open cupola, in which the carillon. The upper two tiers are of wood. The front of the tower at the Markt has a richly treated natural stone portal with double, bossed columns, spandrel fillings, cartouches with inscriptions and a broken pediment. Along the front facade of the Wine House are stairs with balustrades, which provide access to the tower and the upper floor of the building. In the tower is a modern carillon by the firm Van Bergen.
