The register's description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic garden and park layout of Fogelsangh State contains component parts from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The linden avenue, projected perpendicular to the main axis of the layout (Kleasterwei - Keningswei), which runs parallel to the rear facade just behind the main building, was probably laid out in the 17th century. The rectangular ditch system, which surrounds the estate, dates in part from the 17th century, as shown by the map of the estate from 1668, although it then still had a trapezoidal course. On the estate map from 1734 the course of the ditch system is rectangular and is surrounded by a tree belt. On the same map it can be seen that the straight axis from Kleasterwei to the front facade of the house had already been laid out. The planting of oaks in single rows on the east and south tree belts may date from this time as well. For the rest, the geometric lane system of the layout of Fogelsangh State probably also came into being in the 18th century. At that time the long central axis Kleasterwei - Keningswei, planted with oaks in single rows, was probably laid out, interrupted by the rectangular ditched estate and a meadow to the east of it. Also the laying out of the oak avenue, planted in single rows on the east and south boundaries, with which the garden and park layout and the forest parcels lying within the historic layout were screened off from the surroundings, dates from this period, as do several transverse lanes within this historic layout. Also the so-called Modderberg to the south and the ditched former kitchen garden and orchard to the east of the house date from the 18th century. Around 1840 the garden architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard designed a large-scale landscape style layout at Fogelsangh State. The design was executed by Lambartus Vlaskamp. Within the ditched section a terraced wooded area was laid out on the north side and on the west side, to the south of the drive, a wooded strip was laid out with beech, weeping beech, oak, chestnut and coniferous timber. These tree species were also applied elsewhere in the landscape park. A forecourt in landscape style was realized, which was smaller in scale than the current oval-shaped seeded drive; this was laid out in 1872, when alterations to the house took place. Around 1840 the section of the linden avenue lying to the east of the main building was felled for the laying out of a lawn and at the height of this lawn the eastern arm of the ditch was widened to a pond. It is possible that at this time the meadow to the east of the eastern tree belt was also included in the landscape style park layout, by cutting through it with a winding lane of oaks planted in single rows. The oak avenue has survived only fragmentarily and is partly recognizable as a trace. The emphasis of the landscape style layout lies to the south and southeast of the main building, where a former octagonal pond to the south of the main building was enlarged to a large landscape style pond. Further to the east two ponds with islets and water courses were laid out in landscape style. On the terrain, which had been excavated into an irregular, undulating landscape, a number of garden houses were built as ornament, such as the rustic hermitage and the tea house on the Modderberg. The rustic deer house, the Hertenkamp with iron fencing and the ice house incorporated in a hill are probably from the second half of the 19th century; which architect was involved is not known. In the triangular parcel in the southwest corner of the historic layout, as in the eastern strip of this layout, forestry was practised, with the exception of the area around the landscape style pond in the latter strip. This pond area has traditionally belonged to the landscape style layout, but now lies isolated in this area, because the connecting paths in landscape style have disappeared over time.
