KASTEEL Wijchen.
Omgracht kasteel, gebouwd tussen 1609 en 1625 in renaissancevormen, waarbij aanzienlijke muurfragmenten van een voorgaand laat-middeleeuws slot worden gebruikt.
In 1906 uitgebrand en vervolgens gerestaureerd door de architect F.A. Ludewig uit Nijmegen.
Sinds 1933 in gebruik als gemeentehuis. Het slot bestaat uit drie vleugels, die een binnenplaats omsluiten en op de hoeken uitgekraagde arkeltorentjes bezitten.
De noordvleugel heeft aan de binnenplaatszijde een traptoren met merkwaardige houten, door een lantaarntje onderbroken spits met gezwenkte bekroning. De oostvleugel is naar de binnenplaats met een overwelfde galerij geopend. De vensters hebben geknikte en met blokken versierde ontlastingsbogen. De drie vleugels dragen hoge leien daken, bekroond door sierlijke, door natuurstenen banden verlevendigde, schoorstenen. De binnenplaats wordt aan de zuidzijde afgesloten door een ondiep poortgebouw met rijk behandelde voorgevel, waarin een natuurstenen poortomlijsting met borstbeeld in aedicula geflankeerd door wapens. CASTLE Wijchen.
Motted castle, built between 1609 and 1625 in Renaissance forms, using considerable wall fragments of a preceding late-medieval castle.
Burned out in 1906 and subsequently restored by the architect F.A. Ludewig from Nijmegen.
In use as a town hall since 1933. The castle consists of three wings, which enclose a courtyard and possess corbelled corner towers on the corners.
The north wing has a stair tower on the courtyard side with remarkable wooden, interrupted by a lantern, sharp-pointed spire with swept crown. The east wing is opened to the courtyard with a vaulted gallery. The windows have bent and block-decorated relieving arches. The three wings carry high slate roofs, crowned by elegant chimneys enlivened by natural stone bands. The courtyard is closed on the south side by a shallow gate building with richly treated front facade, in which a natural stone gate frame with bust in aedicula flanked by coats of arms. In the castle a natural stone Renaissance fireplace.
