Description

Characteristic of the Kerkplein and situated next to the Hervormde church is the Schultehuis, which manifests itself in its present form as early 17th-century. The building history of this former bailiff's seat, judged by the brick format used and the remains of sandstone cross windows, runs through a late 19th-century plastered treatment which was undone at the time of the (reconstructive) restoration in 1975 in favour of the present 17th-century appearance, presumably back to the 16th century.

Undercellared single-storey building, erected of headers in brick and covered by a fairly steep gabled roof tiled with tiles between gables with corner chimneys; brick nogging; stone anchors; the outbuilding (enlarged at the time of restoration) at the rear has matching design and is covered by a half-mansard roof tiled with tiles adjoining the main building. In the front facade two (still late 16th- or early 17th-century?) substantial natural stone cross windows each with four six-pane sashes and half shutters, which on the grounds of building traces at the time of restoration were brought back into this form at the expense of a very austere 19th-century treatment. In the detached side facade door with stoep and two light openings with shutters at the top; brick nogging; stone anchors. Internally of importance are the cellar covered by a heavy semicircular late 16th-century vault(?) and paved with red tiles and the predominantly late 19th-century characteristics of the Schultekamer located above it, the floor of which is likewise paved with (older) red tiles laid in chequer and half-brick bond and the walls are lined with late 19th-century tiles with simple motif; beam ceiling, bed recesses and built-in cupboard wall and modest fireplace are likewise late 19th-century.

Schultehuis, of general cultural- and architectural-historical importance on account of:

-the former function of the building as seat of the bailiff;

-the central location in the village core, which brings out the importance of this function;

-the 16th- and 17th-century elements (vaulted cellar, tiled floors, brick format and on the grounds of remains reconstructed cross windows) and the late 19th-century treatment of the Schultekamer, which all testify to the history of the building;

-the reconstructive restoration, whereby a restoration philosophy formerly in common use has been documented;

-the characteristic location at the Kerkplein in the centre of the village and next to the Hervormde church, whereby the historical situation is reinforced in monumental terms.
