Omschrijving

Description
PARK AND GARDEN LAYOUT OF THE COUNTRY ESTATE, located in the core of the landed property. Schoonheten belongs to the group of historical large East-Netherlands reclaimed estates, whose laid-out avenues and watercourses served to open up uncultivated lands. The regular pattern in which this reclamation took place is based on functional and architectural considerations.
Much of the pattern of straight avenues, of rectangular and square parcels, some surrounded with hedgerows, with house and outbuildings, and of garden layout and meadows, that came into being in the 17th and 18th centuries, has been preserved. From this pattern, which in stylistic terms is renaissance in construction by virtue of its configuration of squares and rectangles without arrangement along a central axis, there remains the rectangular, moated and on three sides (east, south, west) surrounded parcel with house, outbuildings and utility gardens, the rectangular field to the west of this surrounded with hedgerows, with a solitary group of oaks as remnant of a 17th-century hedgerow, the straight drive avenue from Schoonhetenseweg planted on both sides with oaks and beeches to beyond the house, the avenue situated parallel to the drive avenue planted with oak and beech (on the south side double) with its long side laid out parallel against the south side of the said utility gardens, the rectangular field to the east of the parcel, in which in the 19th century a layout in landscape style was realized, the circular basin in the south-east corner of this terrain, the rectangular pond to the north of the drive avenue at the level of the said landscape-style layout, Schoonhetenseweg planted on both sides with oaks, the avenue to the east of this planted on both sides with deciduous and coniferous trees, and two cross avenues which, insofar as it concerned the part to the north-east of the house, connect the Schoonhetenseweg and the avenue situated to the east of this and parallel to it.
In the last quarter of the 18th century, two identical cross avenues were laid out between Schoonhetenseweg and the avenue situated to the east of this and parallel to it, but then to the south-east of the house. Moreover, at that time the renaissance layout of the Schoonheten scheme was altered. The large farm building, which had been built on the east side and obstructed the view from the house to Schoonhetenseweg, was demolished. Two current farm buildings were realized shortly to the north and south-east of the house with a ground plan curved in a quarter-circle facing the house. Thus arose also the present forecourt with the centrally located central section, whose boundary on the east side follows the quarter-circular course of the ground plan of the outbuildings on this side and on the west side has an evenly curved form. Since correspondence indicates that architect P.W. Schonck visited Schoonheten in this period, it is presumed that he was the architect of these farm buildings and of the alterations in the layout, which were made possible by the siting of the new farm buildings. Projected from the centrally located entrance section in the east gable of the house, the still existing sight line was realized in an easterly direction, which extended some distance in an easterly direction via the then likewise laid-out Graaf Portlanddijk. The rows of oaks on both sides of this axis to the east of the parcel date from this period, as do the elongated oval pond situated to the east of this on the central axis, although the boundary of this was given a more irregular course during the landscape-style layout of this park section. This landscape-style layout from circa 1850, which is somewhat neglected but well preserved in terms of structure and composition, consists of an open oval-shaped section bordered by trees at the level of the central sight line and a wooded section to the south of this, intersected with a depressed pattern of winding paths, two ponds in landscape style and a circular basin from the 17th or 18th century, an ice house and a circular reed-thatched garden house, the latter two 19th-century.
From the beginning of the 19th century probably dates the landscape-style view from the house in the direction of the hedged meadow to the west of the house, which is determined by a solitary group of oaks - remnant of a presumed 17th-century cross-hedgerow on this field that was then felled - and by the farm building now in ruined condition to the west of the most westerly hedgerow in the historical layout, in the corner of this hedgerow and the avenue to the south of the park in landscape style, the utility gardens by the house and the said field to the west of this.
Shortly after 1900, a porter's/chauffeur's house was built on the north side of the corner of the drive avenue and Schoonhetenseweg. Around this time, the profile of the central sight line, which previously ended on Graaf Portlanddijk, was extended in an easterly direction, by clearing space in the meadows and woods surrounded by wooden banks to the east of Graaf Portlanddijk on the central axis. To obtain optimal perspective effect of the axis, this space was kept gradually wider in an easterly direction. On the east side, the layout of the sight line ends on the cadastral plot Raalte nr. G 1067, but the architectural effect of the axis consists in large part thanks to the space kept free to the east of the cadastral plot Raalte nr. G 1067, whereby from the house to the present day a view of the Holterberg can be enjoyed. L.A. Springer laid out around this time directly on the south side of the house, between the house and the vegetable garden, flower garden and orchard, the still existing rectangular sunken ornamental garden, consisting of an ornamental pattern of small compartments surrounded by box hedges around a centrally located small round pond and surrounded with a flagstone path. In 1919, he likewise laid out a park wood intersected by winding paths with pond section to the south-east of the said landscape-style park, which was bounded on its long sides by Schoonhetenseweg and the avenue situated to the east of this and parallel to it. This layout has been preserved as park wood. Springer perhaps also designed the said garden house and designed the narrow wooded section with winding path, with its long east side bordering on Schoonhetenseweg and its short south side situated against the north boundary of the plot of the porter's/chauffeur's house.
