Omschrijving
Fort Rammekens of Zeeburg.

Description
Fort Rammekens or Zeeburg. Important bastioned fort, built on the orders of the regent Maria of Hungary in 1547 by the fortification engineer Donato de Boni and Peter Fransz, to protect access to the harbour of Middelburg, which ran here. Altered in 1652, 1717, converted to a hospital in 1787, after 1810 strengthened and modernised with an earthen crownwork on the orders of Napoleon. The fort is surrounded on the land side in a wide arc by ramparts and a moat. From the original layout, besides two casemented half-bastions, the monumental entrance gate has survived, in a Renaissance of Italian allure, with substantial bolwerk under heavy moulding; the voussoir of the arch with head and date. In the lower walls on the Schelde are stones with 1717 7/10 and 1722 12/6 and in the later masonry heightened walls a stone with date (1787). From the Napoleonic earthen crownwork the left bastion entirely and the middle bastion in part disappeared in 1944.
