Omschrijving
HERV. KERK (St. Jacob). In zijn huidige vorm laat-gotische bakstenen kruiskerk. Bij de bouw bleven de toren en de koorsluiting van een oudere kerk behouden. In 1911 zijn toren en kerk door brand verwoest, doch daarna in de oude vorm herbouwd; nieuw herstel na oorlogsschade. De plattegrond doet een basilicale aanleg vermoeden; de opstand echter is die van een hallenkerk, met drie even hoge, met hout gewelfde beuken. Geprofileerde vensters en steunberen, geprofileerd poortje in het koor aan de zuidzijde en poortje met korfboog in het koor aan de noordzijde. In de kerk zeer beschadigd epitaaf, uit 1619 en Lodewijk XVI grafmonument van wit en zwart marmer voor Daniel Octavius Barwell, gebeeldhouwd door J. Camhout plm 1780. Koperwerk gered bij de brand van 1911; twee doopbogen, uit 1655 en 1656 en een vroeg 18e eeuwse lezenaar met pelikaan. Aan de zijde van de Branderijstraat een van elders overgebrachte hardstenen portiek, bestaande uit een toog met gebeeldhouwde sluitsteen, waarboven een hoofdgestel met klein middenfronton en hoekbollen. Description
REFORMED CHURCH (St. Jacob). In its present form a late-Gothic brick cruciform church. During construction the tower and chancel of an older church were retained. In 1911 the tower and church were destroyed by fire, but subsequently rebuilt in the old form; new restoration following war damage. The ground plan suggests a basilica layout; however, the elevation is that of a hall church, with three equally high aisles with timber vaulting. Profiled windows and buttresses, profiled doorway in the choir on the south side and doorway with basket arch in the choir on the north side. In the church a severely damaged epitaph from 1619 and a Louis XVI monument of white and black marble for Daniel Octavius Barwell, sculpted by J. Camhout circa 1780. Metalwork saved from the 1911 fire; two baptismal arches, from 1655 and 1656, and an early 18th century lectern with pelican. On the Branderijstraat side a hard stone portico brought from elsewhere, consisting of an arch with sculpted keystone, above which an entablature with small central pediment and corner balls. In the frieze a cartouche with date 1654.
