Omschrijving

Description
Designed according to the principles of the Nieuwe Bouwen by J.A. Brinkman and L.C. van der Vlugt in 1929-30 on commission from M.A.G. van der Leeuw, entirely detached HOLIDAY HOUSE with BARN. It is composed of cubic building volumes on an elongated ground plan with in- and out-projecting corners, and partly constructed in brick, partly in wood, with flat roofs provided with sloping drip edges. The O-block - in which the living room is housed - is constructed in brick, with flat white-rendered walls on a black plint, and has partly a second storey; at the far right the lower section provided with large windows is covered by a far-projecting canopy, which rests on a thin steel column. The W-wing is entirely constructed in wood - with predominantly horizontal rebated joints, alternating with vertical boarding - and contains on the SW corner a rounded extension and on the NW corner a blocky extension. On the E-side the wing - for accommodating the kitchen - is extended to the easternmost wall of the concrete section. The windows set in wooden frames - horizontal and vertical - are of varying size and harmoniously distributed over the facades, on the basis of a fixed unit of measurement and dependent on the function of the interior spaces. The low, blocky barn is executed like the O-block and connects to it via a concrete wall - with gate - and has only on the S-side a completely blind facade.
The main entrance is located in the centre of the N-facade; the wooden door contains a circular window. A side entrance to the kitchen - a wooden door with three-part window - is located in the E-facade. The windows in the bedrooms are low fanlights; at the S corner of the SE terrace under the canopy a narrow wind screen - consisting of steel and glass - is placed.
In the living room the open fireplace is placed against this corner, the chimney of which projects above the high building block; against the long wall a continuous, low chest of drawers is placed.
On the S-side furthermore some unrendered brick garden walls are built which partly reflect the ground plan of the house.
Holiday dwelling house and barn on account of their overall architectural and technical design - notwithstanding later-applied partial facade cladding and differing colour of the originally grey-painted frames - as a representative example of the Dutch contribution to the Nieuwe Bouwen from the period 1920-40 of general importance for its significance in the development of modern architecture.
