Inleiding

Introduction
CEMETERY WITH REMAINS OF CHURCH BUILDING AND TOWER, located on an oval-shaped elevation. Partly surrounded by a broad moat. The burial grounds lie centrally on the plot with on the west side a remnant of the old church tower, later used as a mortuary chapel. A somewhat lower-lying path runs around the entire cemetery. The burial ground has probably been in use since the 9th or 10th century. The church that stood here was enlarged several times but was demolished in 1820 after a new church was built elsewhere. From 1829 the burial ground has been in the hands of the municipality. In the last quarter of the 19th century the burial ground was extended on the south side by raising the slope on that side.

Description
Oval-shaped plot with in the middle CEMETERY oriented east-west and thus following the orientation of the former church. The cemetery can be divided into a number of smaller burial fields. At the height of the former choir of the church, a burial field extends across the full width with mainly gravestones, including a number of very large ones still from the church. The large gravestones are of Namur stone, a number of younger ones are of hardstone. A single 19th-century monument has the typical stylistic characteristics of that period such as obelisk or column or is surrounded by ironwork. The space between the gravestones is bounded with ground cover. A second burial field to the south of the former church is a kind of transitional area with gravestones and stelae of more recent date. Along the central path there are still several grave vaults with covering marked off with ironwork. The remaining burial fields, more towards the west, contain 20th-century stelae of granite or hardstone in rows. Between the grave monuments themselves there is little space and between the rows runs a narrow path. All burial fields are bordered with a low boxwood hedge. The main entrance is in the north and consists of a wrought-iron entrance gate with two opening sections between solid brick pillars. Towards the middle rising gate sections with alternating short and long bars, crowned with lily motifs. The pillars are painted white and crowned with a hardstone coping plate with a composite funerary symbol in cast iron in the form of a crossed scythe and a downward-pointing torch with above it a winged hourglass with a butterfly. The cemetery lies approximately one and a half metres higher than the surroundings. Through the 19th-century extension in the south and east the slope is steeper here than on the north and west sides. A narrow gravel path runs around the entire burial ground. From the entrance a path runs onto the burial ground, which then leads at right angles to the mortuary chapel. All paths are provided with fine gravel. At the rear of the mortuary chapel the path leads further on to the path that runs around the entire burial ground. The entire site has a characteristic layered green structure, from inside to outside: the cemetery itself is surrounded by a maple hedge, around which runs a path with tree rows on either side, then wooded planting and then partly a moat. In the north and east the built development adjoins closely on the cemetery. The MORTUARY CHAPEL is a remnant of the former church tower. Small building of one storey on square ground plan covered with Old Dutch tiles hipped roof built from clinker bricks in Flemish bond. On the east and west side an arched entrance with a triple brick roll moulding. In the gable several anchors. The innermost roll moulding rests on hardstone consoles. On both sides a double wooden door with ornamental wrought-iron fittings on the inside. The inner walls are plastered and there is an attic on closely spaced beams. In one of the inner walls is a candle niche.

Valuation
The General Cemetery with associated grave markers is of general cultural and funerary-historical importance:

- on account of the age and clear presence of the remains of church and tower;

- on account of the funerary-historical and genealogical value of the grave markers, in particular those around the former choir of the church;

- on account of the characteristic 19th-century character of the layout and grave markers;

- on account of the presence of graves of members of prominent families and persons who were of importance to the history of Jutphaas and the surrounding region;

- on account of the characteristic green structure;

- on account of the characteristic location in the old core of Jutphaas and the visual unity that the cemetery forms with its surroundings;

- as part of an important green area within the growth centre of Nieuwegein.
