Description

The Ned. Herv. Church (H. Machutus), rebuilt on the walls and some columns of a church destroyed by fire in 1901, is a brick cruciform church with giant orders, consisting of a west tower (first half of 14th century, upper part second half of 15th century); a nave (14th century) with two, to the east 3/8 closed younger side aisles (15th century, restored in 1906), of which the southern is wider than the central aisle; a transept; and a 5/12 closed choir. Against the first bay of the north aisle, arch springers of a vanished chapel. On the west side a portal in the third bay. In the south wall of the choir a blocked doorway. The middle choir window is blocked for the sake of a monument. The side aisles are separated from the central nave by octagonal pillars, of which the two northern ones opposite the entrance were restored in 1901 in the original round form. The half-embedded brick tower stands on a foot of peat stone (probably originating from an older building). Interior: modern vault (1910) and on the old supporting stones. The church possesses: Reader's lectern (second half of 17th century); Ledger stone (1602); white marble epitaph of admiral Pieterson (circa 1723) by Dirk Seunties. Restored in 1883 and 1906. Memorial plaque (third quarter of 18th century) of vice-admiral Jacobus Pieterson (circa 1764). Bell-tower with bell-ring consisting of a bell by Petit and Fritsen, 1907, diam. 127.3 cm and a modern bell. Two-manual mechanical organ made in 1904 by L. van Dam, expanded in 1958 by the firm Leeflang from Apeldoorn.
