Omschrijving
OOSTKERK. Ontworpen door B.F.Drijfhout met advies van Pieter Post. Na overlijden van Drijfhout afgebouwd door A. van 's-Gravezande, met advies van Pieter Post en C.Norwits Azn. 1647-1667. Achtzijdige centraalbouw, kolossale orde op basement, gedekt door achtzijdige koepel, waarboven een achtkante koepeltoren uitsteekt. Aangebouwde achtkante traptoren. Op de hoeken van de gevelvlakken zandstenen pilasters van de Jonische orde. Attiek voorzien van festoenen en - in het frontvlak - het wapenschild van Middelburg, opgehouden door putti. Festoenen onder de boogvensters. Op de gevelhoeken vazen. De grote koepel wordt afgesloten door een balustrade met potten op de hoeken. De lantaarnkoepel wordt door korintische kolommen gedragen en bekroond door de Middelburgse burcht en een windwijzer. Een poortomlijsting van hardsteen vertoont Jonische pilasters en een fronton waarboven door een adelaar opgehouden festoenen. Binnen het raam van de poortomlijsting een ingang met segmentvormig fronton, waarin een liggend geraamte. Aan weerskanten van de hoofdingang een hardstenen poortje met doorbroken fronton en bovenstuk met tekst in cartouche. 1656. Voor de ingangstrappen op het Kerkplein twee hardstenen obelisken. Inwendig: de koepel wordt gedragen door een zware kroonlijst op kolommen met Jonische kapitelen. Ingangspoort met Jonische pilasters en wapen in het fries. Boven de hoofdingang een door korinthische pilasters en fronton omlijst tien gebodenbord, boven de zijpoortjes cartouches met bijbelteksten. Cartouches boven de grote vensters en wapenstenen met de emblemen van regerende burgemeesters. Preekstoel op oudere voet XVIIc, preekstoel XVIII, naar wij mogen aannemen in 1783 aangebracht tegelijk met de bouw van het boven de preekstoel geplaatste orgel. Dit orgel met Hoofdwerk, Bovenwerk, Rugwerk en vrij Pedaal werd in 1781 gemaakt door de Gebr. de Rijckere uit Kortrijk. In 1782 en 1783 verbeterd en voltooid door J. Reichner en J. van Overbeek. In 1973 volledig gerestaureerd door de firma Leeflang. Fragment van een bank XVII en herenbank met hemel. Twee gebrandschilderde glazen, 1664. Klokkenstoel met gelui bestaande uit een klok van C. Noorden en J.A. de Grave, 1715, diam. 217 cm en twee moderne klokken.

Octagonal central building, colossal order on basement, covered by octagonal dome, above which an octagonal dome turret projects. Attached octagonal stair turret. On the corners of the facade sections sandstone pilasters of the Ionic order. Attic provided with festoons and - in the front section - the coat of arms of Middelburg, held by putti. Festoons below the arched windows. Urns on the facade corners. The large dome is closed off by a balustrade with pots on the corners. The lantern dome is carried by Corinthian columns and crowned by the Middelburg citadel and a weathervane. A door frame of hardstone features Ionic pilasters and a pediment above which festoons held by an eagle. Within the frame of the door frame an entrance with segmental pediment, in which a reclining skeleton. On either side of the main entrance a hardstone gate with broken pediment and upper section with text in cartouche. 1656. In front of the entrance steps on Kerkplein two hardstone obelisks. Above the main entrance a Ten Commandments board framed by Corinthian pilasters and pediment, above the side gates cartouches with biblical texts. Cartouches above the large windows and armorial stones with the emblems of ruling mayors. Pulpit on earlier base 17th century, pulpit 18th century, as we may assume erected in 1783 together with the construction of the organ placed above the pulpit. This organ with Great Manual, Positive, Rückpositiv and free Pedal was made in 1781 by the brothers de Rijckere from Kortrijk. In 1782 and 1783 improved and completed by J. Reichner and J. van Overbeek. In 1973 completely restored by the firm Leeflang. Fragment of a bench 17th century and gentleman's bench with canopy. Two stained glass panes, 1664. Bell frame with chimes consisting of a bell by C. Noorden and J.A. de Grave, 1715, diameter 217 cm and two modern bells.
