Monumentaal HUIS, in 1809 naar ontwerp van de schilder Hermans gebouwd op het terrein van het in 1796 opgeheven Wittevrouwenklooster. Tegenwoordig Stadsbibliotheek, Stadsarchief en Politiebureau. De brede voorgevel is voorzien van een middenrisaliet met driehoekig fronton en smalle zijrisalieten met een gebogen fronton als bekroning. Het middenrisaliet heeft een balkondeur onder een gebogen fronton en een balkon met smeedijzeren hek op consoles boven de hoofdingang. Onderpui met blokwerk en koetspoorten in de zijrisalieten. Boven de koetspoorten een venster onder een driehoekig fronton. Het fronton boven het middenrisaliet bevat een rondvenster en relieffiguren van Neptunus en Mercurius van Mathieu de Tombay. Langs de gehele architraaf een rankenfries. Mansardekap voorzien van twee rijen dakkapellen, de onderste met gebogen fronton, de bovenste met ronde vensters - en bekroond door vier monumentale schoorstenen. Description
Monumental HOUSE, built in 1809 to the design of the painter Hermans on the site of the Wittevrouwenklooster monastery suppressed in 1796. Now City Library, City Archive and Police Station. The broad front facade is provided with a central risalit with triangular pediment and narrow side risalits with a curved pediment as crown. The central risalit has a balcony door beneath a curved pediment and a balcony with wrought-iron railing on consoles above the main entrance. Ground floor with blockwork and carriage gateways in the side risalits. Above the carriage gateways a window beneath a triangular pediment. The pediment above the central risalit contains a round window and relief figures of Neptune and Mercury by Mathieu de Tombay. Along the entire architrave a rinceau frieze. Mansard roof provided with two rows of roof dormers, the lower with curved pediment, the upper with round windows - and crowned by four monumental chimneys. On the rear a round-built stair tower.
