Omschrijving
SOCIËTEITSGEBOUW, ondergebracht in een voormalig woonhuis gebouwd omstreeks 1750-1760, en sinds 1763 in gebruik door De Groote Sociëteit. Aan het Vrijthof heeft het pand een lijstgevel met hoekblokken en een ingang en vensters in segmentboogomlijstingen van Naamse steen, elk met een rechte deklijst. In de afgeknotte eindgevel boven de kroonlijst van de zijgevel twee dergelijke vensteromlijstingen, elk bekroond door een gebogen fronton. Boven de voorgevel twee gemetselde dakkapellen met een dergelijk fronton. Het pand wordt beëindigd door een hoog wolfsdak, met haaks op dit wolfsdak een dwarskap richting de achtergevel. Hier wordt het zadeldak afgesloten door een eindgevel in de vorm van een fronton. De gevelindeling van de achtergevel komt overeen met die van de voor- en zijgevel. De zuidelijke zijgevel is uitgevoerd met speklagen. Kelders met middeleeuws breuksteenwerk. Naast de achterbouw een rondboogpoort met aangekoppelde ingang met bovenlicht in een gebeeldhouwde omlijsting van Naamse steen. Description
SOCIETY BUILDING, housed in a former dwelling house built around 1750-1760, and in use since 1763 by De Groote Sociëteit. Facing the Vrijthof the building has a cornice-topped facade with corner blocks and an entrance and windows in segmented-arch surrounds of Namur stone, each with a straight cornice. In the cut-off gable above the cornice of the side facade two such window surrounds, each crowned by a curved pediment. Above the front facade two built-in roof dormers with such a pediment. The building is terminated by a high half-hipped roof, with a transverse roof perpendicular to this half-hipped roof towards the rear facade. Here the gabled roof is closed off by a gable in the form of a pediment. The facade articulation of the rear facade corresponds to that of the front and side facade. The southern side facade is executed with brick courses. Cellars with medieval rubble stonework. Beside the rear building a round-arch gateway with coupled entrance with fanlight in a sculptured surround of Namur stone. On the ground floor various rooms, with a Great Hall enlarged in 1868 on the side of the Vrijthof with a richly decorated neoclassical interior to the design of Auguste Castermans.
