Omschrijving
Het in 1618-1621 door het toenmalige Spaanse bestuur aangelegde verdedigingsstelsel is nog compleet aanwezig. De unieke vestingwal is aan de Noordzijde, waar de stad niet kon worden geïnundeerd, het steilst en het hoogst (ruim 10 meter). Aan de Zuidzijde is de hoogte iets minder maar toch altijd nog 8 meter. De aardwerken omvatten een negental bastions, aan de Oostzijde een ravelijn en aan de Zuidzijde een extra verdedigingslinie. De wal telt slechts op drie plaatsen een doorgang: de Bagijne Poort, de Dubbele Poort en de Gentse Poort. In de nabijheid van de Dubbele Poort de opgenomen overblijfselen van een voorganger.

Description
The fortification system laid out in 1618-1621 by the then Spanish administration is still completely present. The unique fortification wall is on the North side, where the city could not be inundated, the steepest and the highest (over 10 metres). On the South side the height is somewhat less but still 8 metres. The earthworks comprise nine bastions, on the East side a ravelin and on the South side an additional fortification line. The wall has only three passages: the Bagijne Gate, the Double Gate and the Ghent Gate. In the vicinity of the Double Gate the recorded remains of a predecessor.
