Omschrijving
Voormalig Commandementshuis, tevoren Bisschoppelijk Paleis. Ontstaan uit samenvoeging van meerdere huizen; het voornaamste daarvan was het huis van Cloetingen, dat later het refugiehuis der abdij van Tongerloo werd en in 1590 aan het nieuwe bisdom werd afgestaan om, vergroot met drie andere huizen, bisschoppelijk paleis te worden.
Daaraan herinnert nog een natuurstenen medaillon met het wapen van bisschop Zoesius (1615-1625) op de binnenplaats. In 1629 tot Militair Commandement ingericht.
1764 de verschillende voorgevels verbouwd tot een totale gevel, waarin de plaats van de wijde ingang en het uitspringend risaliet nog op de oorspronkelijke verdeling wijzen. Hardstenen ingangspoort met jonische pilasters en hoofdgestel; dakkapellen en kroonlijst met gesneden consoles in Regencestijl.
Inwendig: in de gangen gestucte moerbalken met sleutelstukken (17e eeuw). Description
Former Commandant's House, previously Bishop's Palace. Arose from the combining of several houses; the principal of these was the house of Cloetingen, which later became the refuge house of the abbey of Tongerloo and in 1590 was ceded to the new diocese to become, enlarged with three other houses, the bishop's palace.
