Description

Partly still medieval BUILDING converted in the 17th century into a residence of Abel Coenders van Helpen burgomaster of the city and in 1754 enlarged into the seat of the judicial power with a finely decorated courtroom; the facade in 1913-'17 restored in 17th-century forms.

Basement northern wing with one storey under saddle roof against stepped gable with top pilasters. Adjoining section of twelve narrow Groninger window bays under transverse roof with gable above the southern four bays. The entire facade is interspersed with ashlar bands. The northern section has restored stone cross windows, above which are relieving arches with heads.

Large number of ornamental wall anchors. Approximately in the middle of the southern section a carriage gateway with blocked framing and crowned by a rectangular structure supported on Doric half-columns: 1627. In the northern section an 18th-century framed entrance and crowned with ornamental work, above which is a figure of Justice.

In this section two door framings in the hall, painted beam ceiling in the documentation room on the storey. In the extension a relocated 18th-century carved fireplace with painted panel.
