Omschrijving
Rooms Katholieke KERK van St. Elisabeth, gesticht door de heren van Cuyk op het eind van de XIIIe eeuw; in 1308 kapittelkerk geworden; na de stadsbrand van 1415 vernieuwd; 1506-1516 nieuw koor gebouwd, 1564 het transept.
In 1602 Hervormd. In 1674 door het oorlogsgeweld zwaar beschadigd, 1707-1719 gerepareerd; door het beleg van 1794 opnieuw zwaar beschadigd. In 1804 door de katholieken in gebruik genomen, na watersnood en storm in 1842 hersteld; 1866 instorting van schip en transept; 1874 na blikseminslag de overblijfselen van de toren gesloopt. Aan het transept in XIX een schiptravee met zijkapellen hersteld.
Na al deze wederwaardigheden resten van de kerk nog: koor en dwarspand benevens een travee met zijbeuken van het schip; de onderzijde van de noordelijke en zuidelijke buitenmuren van het schip (achter de huizen van de Kerkstraat) en het onderste deel van de westelijke muur met toreningang, vooral op de noordwesthoek nog een vrij hoog opgaand restant.
De noordelijke transeptgevel bevat in de top een verweerd reliëf met de Annunciatie, de zuidelijke transeptgevel is bekleed met natuurstenen pilasterstellingen, kariatiden en voluten. Inwendig geheel met stucgewelven overkluisd, gewelfde sacristie in de hoek van koor en zuidertransept. Vroeg XVIIIe-eeuws barok meubilair: rijk gesneden hoofdaltaar en twee zij-altaren; twee eenvoudigere altaren in Lodewijk XVI stijl; weelderige preekstoel uit plm 1700; twee biechtstoelen uit 1713; communiebank uit 1758. Marmeren grafmonumenten voor hertog Arnout van Gelre, opgericht in 1802 nadat een ouder praalgraf in 1794 verwoest was, en gemerkt S.C. Hoffman, 's-Hage.
XVIe eeuws St. Jacobsbeeld; reeks fraai gesneden beelden en groepen uit XVIII A, waaronder St. Anna, St. Elisabeth, Joseph met kind Jezus en Janneke. Schilderijen: Kruisiging tussen kanunniken, begijnen, burgerij en ridderschap, bedoeld als gedenkteken voor mr Jacob de Haan (overleden 1528), portret van een kanunnik; een schilderij van David Seghers. Neogotische wandschilderingen door Heymans uit Den Bosch, 1900, van weinig waarde. Orgel met Hoofdwerk en nevenwerk van F.C. Smits uit 1846. Bij de restauratie van 1981 werd een schijn-rugwerk toegevoegd.

Description
Roman Catholic CHURCH of St. Elisabeth, founded by the lords of Cuyk at the end of the 13th century; became a cathedral chapter in 1308; after the town fire of 1415 rebuilt; 1506-1516 new choir built, 1564 the transept.
In 1602 Reformed. In 1674 severely damaged by war damage, 1707-1719 repaired; by the siege of 1794 again severely damaged. In 1804 taken into use by the Catholics, after flood and storm in 1842 restored; 1866 collapse of nave and transept; 1874 after lightning strike the remains of the tower demolished. In the 19th century to the transept a nave bay with side chapels was restored.
After all these vicissitudes, the following remains of the church: choir and transverse section together with a bay with side aisles of the nave; the lower part of the northern and southern outer walls of the nave (behind the houses on the Kerkstraat) and the lower part of the western wall with tower entrance, particularly on the north-west corner still a fairly high standing fragment.
The northern transept facade contains in the top a weathered relief with the Annunciation, the southern transept facade is clad with natural stone pilaster systems, caryatids and volutes. Internally entirely vaulted with stucco vaults, vaulted sacristy in the corner of choir and south transept. Early 18th-century Baroque furnishings: richly carved high altar and two side altars; two simpler altars in Louis XVI style; lavish pulpit from circa 1700; two confessionals from 1713; communion rail from 1758. Marble monuments for duke Arnout of Gelre, erected in 1802 after an older ceremonial tomb was destroyed in 1794, and marked S.C. Hoffman, The Hague.
16th century St. James image; series of finely carved figures and groups from the first half of the 18th century, including St. Anna, St. Elisabeth, Joseph with the Christ Child and little John. Paintings: Crucifixion between canons, béguines, citizens and knighthood, intended as a memorial for Mr Jacob de Haan (died 1528), portrait of a canon; a painting by David Seghers. Neo-Gothic wall paintings by Heymans from Den Bosch, 1900, of little value. Organ with Great Work and Swell Work by F.C. Smits from 1846. During the restoration of 1981 a sham back work was added.
