Inleiding

Plafondindeling oud.

Introduction

The Snouck van Loosenhuis consists of an eighteenth-century townhouse with a cupola room. Both are situated on the Dijk in the Oude Haven of Enkhuizen. The very wealthy merchant and burgemeester Dirk Semeyns van Loosen (1696-1757) was the builder. In 1786 the building came into the hands of his nephew Dirk Elias van Loosen (1738-1812). On his initiative, two adjoining plots were purchased and the building was enlarged on the left side. This gave the building a central hallway with richly decorated rooms on either side: on the left rooms in neoclassical style and on the right rooms in rococo style. In 1893 a substantial wing was added at the rear for housing six or eight unmarried women or widows. To this end the eighteenth-century staircase and rear building were demolished. In their place a new rear building with eight apartments and a new staircase was created. Furthermore installations were fitted and new ceiling paintings were placed.

Description

The TOWNHOUSE features a central hallway with richly appointed rooms on either side. The front facade is provided with two types of natural stone. The plinth is clad in sandstone and the rest in Oberkirchner sandstone. The front facade is six bays wide and has an entrance in the fourth bay from the left. The left part of the facade in neoclassical style looks fairly austere. The right part of the facade is designed in rococo style and is richly decorated with coats of arms and ornamental vases. In front of the facade is a high stoep with bollards and chains. Interior: central hallway with marble wainscoting and flooring, stucco reliefs as overmantels, panelling and ceilings; four doors in curved casings. On the right rooms with framed carved door casings. Rear room with chimney with marble mantelpiece and carved work on the frieze, with a painting by the The Hague painter Pieter Terwesten. Both rooms with dark red velours d'Utrecht hangings. In the rear room two serving cabinets next to the chimney. Ceiling arrangement original. Left room, furnished by Posthumus Meyes with eighteenth-century elements, room wainscoting above which gilded leather from 1742; chimney with marble mantelpiece and carved frieze with a painting by Mattheus Terwesten, 1742. Ceiling with original arrangement. Cupola room with buffet cabinet and chimney with grey marble mantelpiece. Panelling. Ceiling with painted medallions and central piece. The front facade of the cupola room is likewise constructed of sandstone and Oberkirchner sandstone and styled in rococo manner. The front facade with kerfing has a three-sided closure through bevelled corners on either side. In each facade plane one window is set. In front of the facade is a sandstone stoep with bollards, at the level of the bevelled corners are wrought iron railings. Interior, the cupola room still retains many elements from the construction period: a painted ceiling, panelling, a chimney, a buffet niche and a privy. The dwelling and the cupola room are separated from each other by a small gate with a pediment.

Valuation

The TOWNHOUSE and the cupola room are of general importance: - for the architectural historical value through the construction history, for the aesthetic qualities, the applied ornamentation, detailing and preserved interior elements; - for the rarity value of in particular the interior of the townhouse and the cupola room; - for the cultural historical value as an example of an eighteenth-century townhouse; - for the ensemble value as part of the complex.
