Omschrijving
GROOTHOOFDSPOORT. Op de noordelijkste punt der oude stad gelegen poort uit ca. 1325, in de huidige vorm grotendeels uit 1618, gewijzigd in 1692 toen de huidige koepel werd gebouwd. Gerestaureerd 1925-27.
GEBOUW op rechthoekige plattegrond met rijk versierde renaissancegevels.
Rivierzijde: vensters met opzetstukken met koppen op de kroonlijsten. Daarboven kleinere vensters met voluutomlijstingen. Als centraal motief groot reliëf van de Dordtse Stedemaagd in medaillon, omlijst door wapenschilden. Als bekroning een gebroken fronton met manskop en leeuwen. Beeldhouwwerk van Gillis Huppe uit Luik. Voorpoortje met Rococo boog tussen pijlers met nissen, geflankeerd door gebosseerde muurzuilen.
Stadszijde: gevel met dubbele pilasterordonnantie, aan de westzijde niet voltooid. Stenen kruiskozijnen, geprofileerde ontlastingsbogen, puttokopjes en medaillons met koppen. Sokkelgeleding gebosseerd. Boven de door gebosseerde pilasters geflankeerde poortdoorgang stadswapen, bekroond door voluten waartussen medaillon met beeld.
Eenvoudige koepel, achtzijdig, met bekronende lantaarn.
Inwendig balkenzolders met karbelen en sleutelstukken. Figurale kraagstenen op de bovenste verdieping. Gotische schouw. Collectie gevelstenen.

Description
GROOTHOOFDSPOORT. Located on the northernmost point of the old town, gateway from circa 1325, in its present form largely from 1618, altered in 1692 when the present dome was built. Restored 1925-27.
BUILDING on rectangular ground plan with richly decorated renaissance facades.
River side: windows with applied pieces with heads on the cornices. Above these smaller windows with scroll mouldings. As central motif large relief of the Dordrecht Stedemaagd in medallion, framed by coats of arms. As crown a broken pediment with male head and lions. Sculpture work by Gillis Huppe from Liège. Foregateway with Rococo arch between pillars with niches, flanked by rusticated wall columns.
Town side: facade with double pilaster ordonnance, on the west side not completed. Stone cross windows, profiled relieving arches, putlog holes and medallions with heads. Base articulation rusticated. Above the door passage flanked by rusticated pilasters town coat of arms, crowned by scrolls between which medallion with figure.
Simple dome, octagonal, with crowning lantern.
Internally beam ceilings with corbels and key stones. Figural corbel stones on the topmost storey. Gothic fireplace. Collection of facade stones.
Shutter bell by H. Meurs (1615).
Fine building of general importance because of special archaeological and art-historical value.
