Stadhuis. Het aan de westzijde van de Markt tegenover de Nieuwe Kerk gelegen stadhuis heeft als kern een zware, met Gobertangersteen beklede toren uit ca. 1300, waarvan de klokkengeleding drie getraceerde nissen in ieder gevelvlak heeft en een spitsboogfries onder de daklijst. Korte spits met decoratieve wijzerplaten (1536). De toren wordt aan drie zijden omgeven door het van 1619-'20 door Hendrick de Keyser gebouwde raadhuis, bekleed met natuursteen en tegen de voorgevel versierd met ordonnanties van gebosseerde Dorische en gecanneleerde Jonische pilasters. De verdiepingsvensters hebben schelpvormige bekroningen en rond de dakvoet loopt een balustrade. De middenas, waarin de ingang, heeft een gebogen fronton met opzetstuk, waaronder drie nissen, in de middelste waarvan een Justitiabeeld. De zijvleugels hebben eenvoudiger gevels, elk bekroond door een opzetstuk met trapgevel. De ingangspartij is gewijzigd in 1850. Een restauratie is aangevangen in 1963. Description
Town Hall. The Town Hall located on the west side of the Markt opposite the Nieuwe Kerk has as its core a heavy tower clad in Gobertanger stone from ca. 1300, of which the bell storey has three tracered niches in each facade face and a pointed arch frieze under the cornice. Short spire with decorative clock faces (1536). The tower is surrounded on three sides by the council house built by Hendrick de Keyser from 1619-'20, clad in stone and on the front facade decorated with ordonnances of rusticated Doric and fluted Ionic pilasters. The storey windows have shell-shaped crowns and around the eaves runs a balustrade. The central axis, in which the entrance, has a curved pediment with superstructure, below which three niches, in the middle one of which a Justice figure. The side wings have simpler facades, each crowned by a superstructure with stepped gable. The entrance section was altered in 1850. A restoration was begun in 1963. Internally the tower contains an old city prison. Bell ropes by Hendr. van Trier and Francois Hemony.
